A Prayer Before Dawn

Billy Moore, a young British boxer grappling with heroin addiction, finds himself incarcerated in Thailand after being caught with stolen goods and a firearm. Thrust into the unforgiving environment of Klong Prem prison, he quickly learns the harsh realities of his new surroundings. As he is forced into a cramped cell ruled by the intimidating cell boss Keng, Billy faces unimaginable horrors—sleeping next to a corpse and witnessing the brutal assault of a fellow inmate at knifepoint. The atmosphere around him is fraught with peril, leading to a violent episode where he viciously bites a corrections officer’s neck in a fit of despair after being denied medication.

In the midst of this turmoil, Billy finds himself drawn to a transgender prisoner named Fame, seeking solace in an unexpected friendship. However, his situation deteriorates further, leading him to a dark path of substance abuse. The pressures of prison life culminate in a vicious altercation where he seriously injures two chefs after succumbing to the temptations of drugs supplied by a corrupt officer.

Push to the brink, Billy attempts to take his own life by slitting his wrist, but fate intervenes, allowing him to survive. Yearning for redemption and the chance to face his demons, he ultimately enlists in the prison’s boxing team with Fame by his side, and a romantic bond develops between them. He soon immerses himself in Muay Thai, demonstrating resilience and skill that leads him to victory in his first match. His performance catches the eye of Officer Preecha, resulting in a transfer to the boxing team cell, marking him as the first foreign competitor in Thailand’s national Muay Thai tournament.

Despite the camaraderie he builds with his fellow boxers, ominous threats loom over him from Keng and his gang, who prepare to retaliate if he does not secure a victory in the ring. To make matters worse, lingering physical ailments from his drug abuse jeopardize his health, placing him at risk for severe injuries. Nevertheless, Billy’s determination pushes him forward into the ring, where he faces a challenging opponent. The match tests his limits; although he endures relentless punishment, he ultimately triumphs with a spinning back elbow, though the toll on his body leads to a harrowing aftermath of blood and unconsciousness.

After a swift hospitalization, Billy briefly escapes into the streets, but his conscience pulls him back, leading him to return to receive the care he desperately needs. During his stay, he shares a poignant moment with his father, portrayed by the real Billy Moore, as they exchange a quiet yet meaningful smile. As the film concludes, we learn through closing titles that after three years in prison, Billy was transferred to a facility in the UK and eventually released on amnesty by the King of Thailand in October 2010. Since his release, he has committed himself to assisting other addicts and passionately advocating for his own recovery journey.
