What Happens in Brotherhood: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Brotherhood (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Brotherhood follows the diverging lives of twin brothers Wale and Akin Adetula, who were deeply scarred after witnessing their parents' murder during their childhood. As adults, the brothers stand on opposite sides of the law: Wale serves as a member of a police SWAT team, while Akin struggles with a criminal record.

Upon his release from prison, Akin joins the dangerous 'Ojuju Boys', a gang specializing in robbing banks and bullion vans. Although their initial heist is a success, the gang pushes for a larger operation. Despite his initial hesitation, Akin participates, but the mission ends in disaster when Wale's SWAT team intercepts their escape. In the ensuing chaos, most of the gang is killed, including Akin's lover, Goldie. During the confrontation, a fellow gang member named Izra betrays the group and escapes with the stolen money.

In a tense standoff, Wale urges his brother to surrender, but Akin is shot by police and falls into the Lagoon. While divers fail to recover a body, Wale is detained by Internal Affairs to determine if he was colluding with the criminals. Meanwhile, Izra attempts to flee the country with a smuggler, claiming to be the sole survivor of the heist. However, Akin—having survived the fall—tracks down and kills Izra before he can escape. The story concludes with a mysterious phone call from Togo, where Akin reaches out to a now-cleared Wale.

Brotherhood Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Brotherhood (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Is Akin dead after falling into the Lagoon?

Akin is alive; the ending confirms that he survived the fall into the Lagoon. The search fails to recover his body, and he is later shown at large tracking Izra, although the film never explains how he escaped the water or remained undiscovered.

Foreshadowing: The failed search for Akin's body quietly foreshadows that he survived the fall.

  • heist
  • missing body
Q2

Did Wale set up the SWAT ambush on the Ojuju Boys?

No. Wale's SWAT unit is assigned to intercept the Ojuju Boys and block their escape, and nothing establishes that he warned or assisted the robbers. His later questioning comes from the fact that the criminal they confront is his twin, not from evidence that he planned the operation.

Foreshadowing: Wale's personal appeal to Akin at the ambush reveals the twin connection that later makes Internal Affairs suspect collusion.

  • swat
  • ojuju boys
  • ambush
  • collusion
Q3

What does the final phone call from Togo mean?

The ending of Brotherhood confirms that Akin survived and is in Togo, where he reaches out to Wale after his brother has been cleared. It reopens the possibility of reconciliation, but because the brothers never meet in the ending, their future remains unresolved.

Foreshadowing: Wale's effort to reason with Akin at the Lagoon shows that their bond survives, making the later call emotionally possible.

Q4

Why does Izra betray the Ojuju Boys?

Izra's exact motive is never stated in Brotherhood. He exploits the chaos created by the police ambush, flees with the stolen money, and claims to be the gang's only survivor, so his betrayal appears opportunistic rather than part of a larger plan.

  • izra
  • ojuju boys
  • betrayal
  • stolen money
  • escape
Q5

Why does Akin kill Izra?

After Izra abandons the crew and tries to escape with their money, Akin tracks him down and kills him before he can leave the country with the loot. The killing is retaliation for Izra's betrayal, but it cannot undo Goldie's death or the deaths of the other gang members.

Foreshadowing: Izra's flight with the stolen money establishes the betrayal Akin later refuses to forgive.

  • izra
  • revenge
  • betrayal

Q6

How does the SWAT ambush turn into a massacre?

Police block the gang's escape route, and the confrontation becomes a gunfight in which most of the Ojuju Boys are killed. Goldie dies during the attempted escape, while Izra uses the chaos to flee with the stolen money and Akin is left facing the police.

Foreshadowing: The gang's confidence after its first successful robbery foreshadows the dangerous escalation of the second heist.

  • swat ambush
  • ojuju boys
  • heist
  • goldie
  • police
Q7

Why is Wale investigated by Internal Affairs?

Internal Affairs takes Wale into custody because Akin is his twin, Wale was present as the SWAT officer who confronted him, and the operation ended in a bloodbath. The agency investigates possible collusion rather than proven misconduct, and Wale is ultimately cleared.

  • collusion

Q8

How did Wale and Akin end up on opposite sides of the law?

Brotherhood traces the brothers' divergence to the shared trauma of watching their parents murdered, but it does not tie either adult choice to one specific post-trauma decision. Wale becomes a SWAT officer, while Akin accumulates a criminal record and repeatedly returns to prison.

Foreshadowing: The childhood scene of their parents' murder foreshadows how the same trauma sends the twins toward opposing adult identities.

Q9

Why is Akin shot during the heist escape?

During the standoff, Wale urges Akin to surrender and face arrest rather than continue into the lethal confrontation. Police then shoot Akin, sending him over the edge into the Lagoon. The inability to recover his body leaves his fate uncertain for much of the story.

Foreshadowing: Wale's appeal for Akin to surrender directly sets up the shot that sends him into the Lagoon.

Q10

Why does Akin agree to the bigger heist after initially resisting it?

The Ojuju Boys' first successful robbery gives them the confidence to attempt a much larger operation. Akin initially resists because he senses the danger, but he ultimately joins the crew; the film does not provide a separate personal reason that resolves his hesitation.

Foreshadowing: The first heist's success sets up the gang's decision to risk everything on a larger operation.

Q11

What happens to Goldie during the heist?

Goldie is killed while the gang tries to escape the police blockade. Her death leaves Akin isolated after most of his crew dies and Izra escapes with the stolen money.

  • goldie
  • akin
  • death
  • heist escape
Q12

Why does Akin join the Ojuju Boys after being released from prison?

After his release, Akin has few legitimate prospects and drifts back into the criminal underworld. He joins the Ojuju Boys because he already knows that life, and his criminal experience makes him useful to a gang that robs banks and bullion vans.

Foreshadowing: Akin's repeated returns to prison foreshadow that this release will not be enough to keep him away from the gang.

  • ojuju boys
  • gang
  • bank robbery
Q13

How does Akin track down Izra after the heist?

Izra contacts a smuggler and tries to flee the country with the stolen money after the botched heist. The film does not show the practical details of Akin's search, only that he reaches Izra before the escape can be completed.

More Movies Like Brotherhood, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Brotherhood tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies like Brotherhood: Blood Ties Tested by Violence

Loyalty binds characters together as crime, trauma, and revenge pull them apart. Explore movies like Brotherhood featuring fractured family loyalty, competing loyalties, and shared trauma. These intense dramas follow relatives whose bonds are strained by crime, suspicion, and violence, creating emotionally heavy choices with lasting consequences and uncertain futures for every character involved.

  • family betrayal
  • divided loyalties
  • shared trauma
  • violent choices
  • moral conflict
  • tragic survival
  • Tone: tense, tragic, morally conflicted
  • Pacing: variable, quieter passages then violent acceleration
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Characters in these stories begin with a fragile bond, often rooted in childhood or family duty. As opposing paths expose them to crime and violence, each must decide whom to protect and whether loyalty can survive betrayal. The arc moves from wounded intimacy to impossible choices, with survival and a fragile reopening of the bond arriving only at a severe moral cost.

Why they belong together: These films are united by relatives forced to confront a conflict larger than their shared history. Childhood trauma, divided loyalties, family trauma, and violent retaliation intensify every decision, making the central question less about justice than whether personal bonds can endure it.

Movies like Brotherhood: Tragic Crime Spirals and Retaliation

A single violent choice escalates into betrayal, retaliation, and irreversible loss. Find movies like Brotherhood with botched crimes, ambushes, and retaliatory killing. Similar thrillers build from uneasy family history into violent set pieces, then follow grief and suspicion as each consequential act narrows the path to survival for those caught inside it.

  • botched crime
  • ambush violence
  • retaliation
  • betrayal
  • grief
  • moral collapse
  • Tone: ominous, brutal, morally unsettled
  • Pacing: variable, accelerating into chaotic violence
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A dangerous plan sets a chain of violence in motion: a crime goes wrong, trusted people are caught or killed, and retaliation replaces judgment. Quiet moments of grief and family history make the consequences personal, while successive confrontations drive the story toward a tragic, morally unsettled resolution.

Why they belong together: These films connect through escalating criminal consequences and the loss of moral restraint. Violent set pieces are balanced by grim aftermaths, while betrayal, grief, revenge, and survival transform one disastrous decision into a sustained cycle of tragedy.
