The film opens with the fall of Judge Costa Makantasis Héctor Alterio from the Federal Courthouse, a moment that sends shockwaves through a family and shines a cold light on a tangled web of loyalties and secrets. His eldest son Pablo Makantasis [Leonardo Sbaraglia] drags the body of Ana Muro [Leticia Brédice] through the house they share with his two younger brothers, setting off a chain of investigations that will test truth, memory, and the cost of hidden desires.
Two stark investigations begin to unravel the deaths. Costa Makantasis’ fall is quickly treated as a suicide, while Ana Muro’s murder falls under the scrutiny of Judge Beatriz Teller, Cecilia Roth. As Teller digs, she discovers a web of conflicting confessions: all three brothers claim they acted alone and insist the others are lying, yet the evidence seems to cast doubt on each of them. They press Teller to also investigate their father’s case, arguing that a deeper, dirtier truth lies beneath the surface. Under pressure from superiors eager to close the Costa Makantasis case, Teller risks her career by resisting to pass the Ana Muro investigation off to the presumed court handling the suicide, determined not to let the truth be buried.
The narrative unfolds through an interlaced structure that blends flashbacks with the present-day hearings. The film is divided into four unequal parts, each dedicated to one of the Makantasis brothers and Ana Muro, with fragments of the larger story emerging from each perspective. Only at the end do these divergent views converge to offer a fuller, though still incomplete, picture of what happened the night of the deaths.
Backstory gradually comes into sharper focus: Costa Makantasis had pursued Ana Muro’s father, Francisco Muro, a powerful businessman suspected of corruption and even involvement in murder. Unbeknownst to them, Ana and Alejandro Makantasis began a secret romance, and Ana moved in with Alejandro and his brothers. Costa, while cautious, believed their private affairs should not be swept into his professional duties, but concerns grew when Ana began bringing Francisco’s documents into his office in an attempt to clear her father. She glimpsed evidence that supported some of the suspicions against Francisco and left with the documents—only to be interrupted by a sudden, deadly turn of events.
Two of Francisco Muro’s employees arrive at Costa Makantasis’ building, and in a push that ends with his death on the roof, the already fragile balance between love, loyalty, and power shatters. Ana, who had left the scene moments earlier, looks up and witnesses the fatal moment, and Pablo—seeing her frightened, misreads the scene and believes she is involved. He shouts to his brothers that she killed their father, while Alejandro defends her, noting that Ana had betrayed him by cheating with Nicolás. Yet Pablo’s accusation reverberates differently with each brother: Alejandro returns home, tears down the party decorations they had prepared for Ana’s hopes, and when Ana arrives, the accusation explodes into a brutal confrontation.
Ana speaks of love and pain, and when Alejandro pushes back, she reacts with a desperate act: she uses a knife that Alejandro still holds, an act that ends in her death and leaves the brothers teetering on the edge of violence and guilt. The emotional fallout lingers as the three brothers confront Teller in her office, demanding answers and accountability. The film closes on a stark, unresolved note: Teller has sent the brothers back to their prison cells, and justice—so cleanly defined in courts—feels elusive, leaving a lingering sense that some truths may forever remain out of reach as the escalator carries the brothers away to an uncertain fate.
