Ben Singer, portrayed by Matthew Broderick, is a man grappling with the complexities of his life as a once-hopeful children’s folk singer turned career proofreader. Struggling with a deep-seated negativity that permeates every aspect of his existence, Ben is also a compulsive marijuana smoker and a less-than-ideal weekend dad. His only solace comes from engaging in regular chess matches and spirited discussions about game theory with his roommate, Ibou, a Senegalese man who provides a unique perspective on life.

However, life takes a sharp turn when Ibou falls seriously ill, and the situation is made worse by the indifference of a municipal employee, which reinforces Ben’s cynical outlook on life. Feeling compelled to take action, he decides to channel his frustrations into a frivolous lawsuit against the city, claiming depraved indifference. Yet, as the story unfolds, Ben discovers that his perspective on cynicism might not be as clear-cut as he believed.

Writer and director Josh Goldin meticulously explores Ben’s misanthropy, inviting the audience to consider that his midlife crisis could very well be a product of his own disposition. Goldin masterfully balances humor with poignant moments, enriching this character study with depth and eclectic charm. Through Broderick’s compelling performance, audiences are introduced to a flawed yet potentially redeemable character in Ben, whose journey invites reflection on one’s outlook on life and the meanings we attach to our experiences. The film ultimately leaves viewers questioning their own perspectives and the balance between seriousness and levity in the human condition.
