Ree Dolly, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, is a resilient 17-year-old who tirelessly cares for her family, which includes her mentally ill mother, her younger brother Sonny, and her little sister Ashlee. Every day, she ensures they are nourished, dressed, and ready for school while also imparting essential survival skills like hunting and cooking. Life takes a grim turn when Ree learns that her father, Jessup, a meth-cooker, has been missing for an extended period. The local sheriff informs her that since Jessup hasn’t been located before his court date next week, their home and property, which Jessup used as collateral for his bail, are in jeopardy.

Determined to track down her father, alive or dead, Ree embarks on a dogged quest, questioning relatives and associates of Jessup, only to be met with warnings to steer clear or face dire consequences. Even her uncle, Teardrop, brilliantly played by John Hawkes, cautions her that Jessup may have been silenced for his cooperation with the authorities. Despite the threats, Ree’s tenacity drives her to confront the region’s formidable patriarch, Thump Milton. However, she pays a steep price for her persistence—being brutally beaten by three clan women in a bid to instill fear.

When Ree boldly pleads her case, underscoring her role as the family’s protector, she asks, > “If my father isn’t found—dead or alive—the bond will be forfeited, and we’ll be forced out into the woods.” Her uncle Teardrop ultimately comes to her rescue, asserting that he will assume responsibility for their safety. They manage to leave the clan without further incident, but not without the heavy burden of unspoken truths lingering in the air.

As Ree grapples with the potential loss of her home and family unit, she considers enlisting in the military after spotting recruitment posters promising a lucrative sum. However, her aspirations are crushed when the recruiter informs her that her family cannot be cared for during her service.

In a shocking twist, the same women who previously assaulted Ree return, offering her a dark yet twisted opportunity to ensure her family’s future. They blindfold her and take her to a secluded pond where they insist she reaches into the water to grasp her father’s hand, leading to the unsettling task of severing it with a chainsaw. Despite her anguish, Ree complies, foreseeing no other options to maintain her home.

With the severed hands submitted to the sheriff—who is implicated in her father’s death—Ree’s family retains their home. Unexpectedly, they also gain financial aid from an anonymous source linked to Jessup. The film concludes with Teardrop revealing that he has uncovered the truth of who killed his brother. Though Ree offers him Jessup’s banjo as a keepsake, he urges her to hold on to it. When her brother Sonny questions Ree’s commitment to their family, she reassures him that she would never abandon them. The poignant scene closes with Ashlee picking up the banjo and beginning to play, symbolizing the fragile hope that remains in their tumultuous lives.
