Winter's Bone

Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly takes on the immense responsibility of caring for her family, which includes her mentally ill mother and younger siblings. Every day is a struggle as she provides for their basic needs while teaching them essential survival skills.

The family’s ordeal intensifies when Ree learns that her father, Jessup, has been missing for an extended period. The local sheriff informs her that without her father's presence by his court date the following week, their home and property are at risk of being forfeited.

Determined to find her father, Ree embarks on a relentless search, reaching out to relatives and people linked to Jessup. However, her inquiries are met with hostility and threats, warning her to abandon her quest for fear of repercussions.

Ree confronts her uncle Teardrop, who warns her that Jessup may have been silenced due to his cooperation with law enforcement. Despite the threats surrounding her, Ree’s resolve to learn the truth only strengthens.

To get answers, Ree confronts Thump Milton, a local patriarch associated with her father's dealings. This confrontation results in a harrowing experience as she faces brutality from the violent women of the clan, intended to deter her from continuing her search.

The same clan women who previously assaulted Ree return with a twisted offer to ensure her family's safety. They blindfold her and lead her to a pond, demanding that she retrieve her father's hand from the water—a chilling act that instills both fear and desperation within her.

In a harrowing moment, Ree is compelled to sever her father’s hand with a chainsaw, doing the unthinkable to secure her family's future. This act of desperation highlights the depths of her sacrifice and the disturbing lengths she is willing to go to for her siblings.
