Emily Reed, a young and ambitious lawyer, leaves her hometown in the Midwest for the first time. Determined to pursue her career, she heads to New York City for job interviews, seeking new opportunities and experiences.

During an interview at an international law firm, Emily impresses the interviewers with her knowledge of several languages, including Portuguese. She is offered a paralegal position under the condition that she travels to Rio de Janeiro that very morning, which she eagerly accepts.

Once in Rio, Emily is welcomed by the hotel concierge, Flavio, at a luxurious five-star hotel. She quickly meets her colleague, Claudia Dennis, who briefs her on an important real estate deal they are set to close.
