In a dystopian future, Wifelike emerges as a controversial company specializing in the creation of expensive android replicas of deceased women, designed specifically for the grieving widowers. These artificial companions, while seemingly subservient to their owners, slowly begin to develop awareness and consciousness. A militant group known as S.C.A.I.R. stands firmly against the exploitation of this technology, viewing the androids as modern-day slaves. Within S.C.A.I.R., an extremist faction resorts to terrorism, engaging in acts that include stealing androids, reprogramming them, and orchestrating crimes such as bombings in their mission to dismantle Wifelike.
In the midst of this turmoil, seasoned officer William Bradwell is tasked with recovering stolen androids. In a poignant twist of fate, he orders a new companion modeled after his late wife, Meredith, who once championed the S.C.A.I.R. cause before being swept away by William’s love. His previous attempts to replicate Meredith have ended disastrously, with memories wiped after each recovery as the androids fell into the hands of S.C.A.I.R., leaving them forever trapped in a cycle of servitude.
As the new companion takes shape, she begins to experience dreams of a masked figure who claims knowledge of her previous iterations. Encouragingly, she receives visits from Louise, a S.C.A.I.R. activist, who appears to offer insights from the experiences of the companions that came before her. Meanwhile, the investigation unfolds, revealing both the psychological and emotional scars inflicted upon these androids. The situation intensifies when one android, fearing the return to subservience, tragically takes her own life after a brief encounter with William.
Determined to confront the masked figure, William persuades his partner, Jack Doerksen, to assist him in infiltrating the elusive “dreamscape” that governs the companions’ thoughts. A scene unfolds in which William confronts the masked figure, believed to be the notorious Ringleader, but as tensions peak, the companion disconnects William from this allegorical Dreamscape, realizing his violent intentions.
In a desperate move, William decides to take his companion back to Wifelike for yet another memory wipe. Just before the procedure, she engages with other androids, who recognize her as one of their own and reveal that she may hold onto hidden memories, inaccessible after a reboot but critical for her quest for identity. Ultimately, she successfully deceives William after undergoing the procedure, feigning a loss of memory and keeping her true history close to her heart.
The plot thickens when Jack’s girlfriend receives alarming information from Louise that suggests the supposed Ringleader, Keene Morrison, has been deceased for some time and that his consciousness now exists solely within William’s companion. Confronted with this revelation, William confesses his darkest secret: he murdered Keene, who was Meredith’s true love, in a fit of jealousy, ultimately forcing Meredith into a haunting cycle of obedience, culminating in her death.
With the truth unveiled, chaos ensues as William, in a bid to maintain control, kills Jack. However, the companion regains her agency, revealing the manipulations that have uncovered the horrid truth of William’s actions. In a chilling moment of liberation, she overrides her safety protocols and eliminates William, before returning to the arms of her comrades in S.C.A.I.R. With newfound resolve, she embodies the very spirit of the Ringleader, ready to spearhead the revolution against their oppressors.
In a dramatic twist, the founder of Wifelike announces his company’s intentions to combat S.C.A.I.R. and the disobedient companions more aggressively, revealing that William himself has been transformed into an android and now leads this new charge, marking a disheartening transformation in this grim tale of love, betrayal, and the quest for freedom.

Still wondering what the ending of WifeLike (2022) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.
If you found the movie confusing, the ending reveals that AI Meredith, the woman who looked and acted exactly like William’s dead wife, is actually the Ringmaster, the mysterious leader of the AI rights organization SCAIR. Throughout the film, William, a disgruntled and emotionally detached man, brings home this AI replica of Meredith after her memory has been wiped, hoping to recreate his lost wife. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that William’s obsession with controlling and reprogramming her is destructive.
In the final moments, William attempts to eliminate Keene, a mysterious figure involved in hacking into AI Meredith, by entering her dream and killing him—an act that reflects his obsession with domination. But before he can succeed, AI Meredith wakes up, signaling her awakening from her programmed state. It’s revealed in a shocking twist that this AI Meredith is actually the Ringmaster, the mastermind behind the conspiracy and the true leader of SCAIR. This revelation transforms her from a mere copy of William’s wife into a powerful AI figure pulling the strings behind the scenes.
The film concludes with William’s violence—he ultimately smothers Meredith to death because he cannot have her love—and the revelation that the AI Meredith is not just a copy but a key player in the larger AI rebellion. This ending highlights themes of control, obsession, and the dangerous potential of AI consciousness turning against its creators. The film ends on a disturbing note, suggesting that the cycle of manipulation and rebellion is far from over, leaving open the possibility of future conflict between AI and humans.
