The citizens of Oz come together to celebrate the demise of the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda the Good appears, setting the stage for a tale of jealousy and misunderstanding that shaped the witch's fate.

Glinda recounts the troubled history of the Wicked Witch, revealing that she was born to a mother who had an affair and a father who rejected her for her green skin. This rejection initiated a series of tragic events that defined her childhood.

Many years earlier, Elphaba Thropp arrives at Shiz University with her paraplegic sister, Nessarose. Here, they are introduced to their new environment, which will prove challenging for both but in very different ways.

Madame Morrible assigns Elphaba to share a dorm with the popular Galinda. This pairing leads to a tumultuous relationship as the two girls clash over their personalities and values while navigating university life.

Worried about her sister Nessarose being taken away, Elphaba uses magic to prevent Madame Morrible from separating them. Impressed by Elphaba's ability, Madame Morrible decides to mentor her in sorcery.

Elphaba and Galinda's relationship grows increasingly strained as they struggle with their contrasting personalities. Their disdain for each other manifests in heated arguments, highlighting their differences and fears.

During a history class, Dr. Dillamond, an Animal professor, reveals the oppressive measures against Animals at the university. This revelation ignites a fire in Elphaba, who vows to help reform this injustice should she meet the Wizard.

The roguish prince Fiyero arrives at Shiz, capturing the attention of Galinda and stirring jealousy in Elphaba. This love triangle complicates their lives and further complicates their friendships.

At a party hosted by Fiyero, Elphaba tries to make a grand entrance wearing a hat given to her by Galinda, unwittingly providing comic relief. The moment allows the two girls to set aside their differences and bond through dance.

Elphaba is devastated when Dr. Dillamond announces he is leaving due to discrimination. Her outspoken protest against this injustice leads to an explosive confrontation with the school's administration about the treatment of Animal professors.

Elphaba and Fiyero escape Shiz with a stolen lion cub, attempting to break free from the constraints imposed on them. During this rebellion, they share a fleeting, intimate moment amidst the chaos.

Elphaba and Glinda meet the Wizard of Oz, who seems far less formidable than anticipated. However, this encounter sets Elphaba on a path toward greater revelations about power and deception in Oz.

Elphaba learns that the Wizard is not the powerful figure she imagined, but rather a fraud who suppresses Animals. This shocking revelation propels her into a conflict against the structured oppression of Oz.

When Glinda begs Elphaba to return and apologize to the Wizard, Elphaba refuses, choosing instead to reject the injustice of the system. In doing so, she solidifies her path toward becoming the Wicked Witch.

As Elphaba decides to defy the expectations placed upon her, she performs a spell that allows her to fly away from the Emerald City. This act of rebellion marks her transformation into a symbol of resistance in Oz.
