Wet Season

Ling, a dedicated Malaysian Chinese teacher, faces the challenging journey of trying to conceive via in vitro fertilisation with her husband, Andrew. This struggle is compounded by the responsibility of caring for her bedridden father-in-law, who cannot communicate due to a stroke.

During a critical visit to the gynaecologist, Ling learns that she has two mature follicles, indicating potential hope for her pregnancy. This moment marks a turning point in her emotional journey, igniting her hopes for starting a family.

Outside the clinic, Ling meets Wei Lun, a student who uses crutches due to an injury. She kindly offers to help him get home, discovering that he lives alone while his parents work abroad, establishing an early bond between them.

As Ling conducts remedial classes for her students, she finds that a lack of attendance leads to Wei Lun being the only student left. This moment leads to them sharing durians in the classroom, deepening their friendship and creating an intimate connection.

Wei Lun invites Ling and her father-in-law to support him at a national wushu competition. His victory and gold medal solidify their relationship, creating a familial bond that Ling deeply treasures amidst her own struggles.

Ling's father-in-law passes away peacefully in his sleep, marking a significant moment of grief. This loss brings family tensions to the forefront as her siblings-in-law discuss selling their late father's property, adding to Ling's emotional turmoil.

Seeking solace, Ling returns to her hometown of Taiping, Malaysia. While helping her mother with mundane chores, she reflects on her past and the hope she yearned for, symbolized by gazing at the sun.
