72 Tenants of Prosperity

In 1970s Hong Kong, rapacious landlords threaten to evict 72 tenants living in a crowded block. The tenants rally around two sworn brothers, Ha Kung Eric Tsang Chi-Wai and Shek Kin Jacky Cheung, who organize a stand to defend their home. They manage to defeat the landlord and his landlady and, in a twist of fate, rescue Pinky from a forced marriage. The group includes Ha’s wife Siu Tao Hong Anita Yuen Wing-Yee and Jane Bernice Liu, whose presence adds color to the block, and even the 70s landlady San Gu Charmaine Sheh Sze-Man keeps the tenants in line with a firm hand.

The victory sours as the two brothers become sworn enemies, and their rivalry deepens into fierce competition in business—from the manufacture of plastic flowers to the trade in stinky bean curd. The feud strains family loyalties and friendship, casting a long shadow over the neighborhood for years to come.

Forty years later, in 2010, the story shifts to Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mongkok, the city’s busiest artery, where the Ha and Shek clans clash anew in the electronics and appliances trade. The cutthroat market drives bold promotional tactics: shops deploy pseudo models, comic stores offer unusual foot-massage services, and the street buzzes with a relentless hustle designed to win over wary customers. Amid the frenetic activity, the era’s colorful atmosphere is amplified by the presence of Lolita, a characteristic touch in promotions played by Nancy Sit Ka-Yin.

As rents surge and tensions flare, the landlord’s threats to triple rents and shutter shops loom large, testing every tenant’s resolve. Then a wave of acid-attacks shocks the avenue, causing fear but also rallying the 72 tenants to unite on common ground and safeguard their home.

Against this backdrop of fear and resilience, the old love triangle between Ha and Pinky and Shek persists, simmering beneath the surface of renewed rivalries. Meanwhile, a new generation begins to maneuver their own romantic entanglements within the Ha and Shek families: Ha Junior takes an interest in Shek’s daughter, while Ha’s kung fu-trained daughter becomes the object of pursuit for Shek’s witty, ambitious son. The story threads together love, loyalty, and a stubborn devotion to community, showing how a single street can outlast generations of conflict through solidarity and heart.
