The whole story of The Intestine (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Maya, [Melanie J. Scheiner](/ actor/melanie-j-scheiner), is penniless and unhappy, growing increasingly fed up with her tedious job, unexciting friends, a rundown apartment, and the never-ending burden of caring for her drug-addicted mother. Late one night she meets a wealthy man, Drew Nelles, and wakes up the next morning alone in his upscale suburban home. With Philip nowhere to be found, she attempts to discard her old life and take possession of his empty house. Maya befriends a neighbor and tries to settle in, when she receives a phone call from the hospital informing her of her mother's overdose death. Unable to fully process the news, she hangs up on the doctor Eva Knifed.

Maya's attempt at relocation is hampered by the late-night arrival of Philip's sister, Claudia Dey as Meagan, who is searching for her vanished brother. Meagan comes to believe that Maya is responsible for his disappearance and chases her out of the house. Unwilling to return to her old life, Maya begins to formulate a plan to take back the property she feels is now rightly hers. Sneaking back into the house, Maya witnesses Meagan in the throes of an extramarital affair. Using a friend's car, Maya tracks Meagan and her lover to a lake-side cottage, where she confronts them and offers to keep their liaison secret in exchange for access to Philip's house. Meagan concedes.

Time passes and Maya makes the house her home. The morning after a small party she has thrown at the house, Maya calls the hospital, hoping for more information on her mother's death, but the hospital staff have trouble understanding her words.

Q2

Why does Maya hang up on the doctor when the hospital calls about her mother?

Maya receives news that her mother has died from an overdose, but she is emotionally unable to process this devastating information. Instead of confronting her grief, she hangs up on the doctor. This reaction reflects her pattern of avoiding difficult emotions and her desperate attempt to move forward with her new life without facing the guilt and loss from her past.

Q3

Why does Meagan suspect Maya when she arrives looking for Philip?

Meagan, Philip's sister, arrives at the house searching for her missing brother and finds Maya there with no reasonable explanation. Since Philip is nowhere to be found and Maya has no legitimate claim to the property, Meagan immediately suspects that Maya may have harmed or abducted her brother. Her suspicion drives her to confront Maya and force her out of the house.

Q4

Why does Maya blackmail Meagan over the affair?

After being chased out of the house by Meagan, Maya sneaks back and discovers Meagan having an extramarital affair. Rather than leaving, she uses this damaging secret as leverage. Maya confronts Meagan and her lover at their lake cottage, offering to keep the affair silent in exchange for continued access to Philip's house. This represents Maya's descent into manipulation to secure her desired life.

Q5

Why can't the doctor understand Maya when she calls about her mother?

The morning after Maya throws a party at the house, she calls the hospital seeking more information about her mother's death. However, the doctor struggles to understand her words, likely because Maya is emotionally distant and speaking unclearly, possibly intoxicated or overwhelmed. This moment underscores her isolation and disconnection from reality as she attempts to move forward without confronting her grief.

Q6

What happened to Philip and why did he disappear?

Philip meets Maya late at night and she wakes up in his house the next morning with him already gone. Throughout the film, his whereabouts remain unclear and he never returns. Q7

Why does Maya follow Meagan to the lake cottage?

After discovering Meagan's affair, Maya uses a friend's car to tail Meagan and her lover to a secluded lake-side cottage. She deliberately confronts them there because she needs leverage to get back into Philip's house. The remote location forces Meagan to negotiate with Maya rather than simply dismissing her, giving Maya the bargaining power she needs.

Q8

Why is Maya so desperate to claim Philip's house as her own?

Maya's desperation stems from years of feeling trapped in a life with no stability, working a tedious job, living in a rundown apartment, and caring for her addicted mother. Philip's empty house represents everything she has never had: security, comfort, and a sense of belonging. Rather than return to her previous existence, she is willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto this new life, even if it means manipulating others.

Q9

Why does Maya throw a party at Philip's house?

After securing her hold on the house through blackmailing Meagan, Maya throws a small party to establish normalcy and cement her claim to the residence. The event represents her attempt to create a new identity and life story, pretending she belongs in the house rather than acknowledging it was obtained through deception and manipulation.

Q10

What happens to Maya at the end of the film?

The film ends with Maya still living in Philip's house, having successfully manipulated her way into control of the property. The ending is ambiguous about her long-term future, leaving her hold on this borrowed life uncertain.
