During the Yugoslav wars, Ivan, patriarch of a Croatian refugee family in Auckland, opposes his daughter Nina’s wish to leave home. Nina works at the restaurant where Eddie cooks. To fund independence, she marries a Chinese coworker for residency, gaining funds move in with Eddie. As their bond deepens, Eddie faces Ivan’s fury and Nina’s family ties.
