During Christmas morning in 1987, Ralph receives a VHS camcorder from his parents. He immediately begins filming his neighborhood explorations, DIY music videos with his best friend, and late-night TV rituals. Unbeknownst to him, the blank tape he uses is actually his parents' wedding video.

Ralph continues filming his daily life, stitched together with quirky sketches that parody 1980s late-night television. He captures the world around him as well as parodic infomercials and silly, improvised music videos with his friend. The result is a sprawling, MTV-like collage of the era's media voices.

One video sketch features a surreal talk show where a guest woman argues that the growing use of videocameras will alter how people perceive reality. Ralph watches the bit again and again, as the line between what he records and what he believes starts to blur. The segment foreshadows the film's themes of reality becoming unstable.

Snippets of Ralph's parents' wedding are intercut with vignettes of their deteriorating marriage. The contrast hints at how memory and misfortune intertwine within family history. Arguments and alleged infidelity on the part of Ralph's father emerge across the tapes.

Ralph is drawn to a true crime broadcast about a sorority house fire. The case becomes a catalyst for the nighttime adventure as the late-night programming expands beyond harmless entertainment. His curiosity pushes him toward the unknown.

On New Year's Eve, Ralph and his friend sneak out to investigate the sorority house remains. They hope to uncover clues or perhaps find something sensational on the footage they’re chasing. The plan quickly worsens as danger and supernatural elements emerge.

While exploring, they encounter the ghost of a girl killed in the blaze. The specter haunts the ruins, signaling that the boundary between reality and the recordings may be thinning. The encounter heightens the sense of danger and wonder.

Trying to escape, Ralph discovers an antique television set and plugs his camera into it. He is transported into the world of his own deteriorating VHS, a landscape where the visuals and logic distort as the tape degrades. The switch marks a portal between cinema and memory.

Inside the VHS realm, Ralph encounters several people drawn from the programs he's recorded. The boundary between his recorded life and his reality becomes tangible as he interacts with them. He begins to realize the tapes are more than mere memories.

Ralph meets a younger version of his mother within the surreal landscape. This encounter deepens his understanding of her choices and the family history. The meeting layers emotional stakes onto the journey.

Ralph asks his mother why she married his father despite the unhappiness to come. She recounts a poignant memory from her wedding day that reframes their relationship and hints at the complexity of love and compromise. The memory provides a bridge between past and present.

Ralph and his friend bid the mother goodbye and suddenly find themselves back in the sorority house. They decide they've had enough of VHS, abandon the camera, and return home. They step back into ordinary life with a new perspective on memory and family.
