Jack Gable, John Candy is the lead writer and producer of the soap opera Beyond Our Dreams, a man who pours all his time into the show and keeps a quiet, growing attraction for Laura Claybourne, the actress playing Rachel Hedison. Laura Claybourne, Emma Samms is smart, sharp, and repeatedly negotiating her own terms, a combination that leaves Jack torn between professional ambition and private desire.

Jack’s co-producers, the Sherwoods, push back against parts of his outline for the upcoming season and even threaten to kill off Rachel because of her high-profile contract demands. In a bid to salvage the plan, they hire Arnie Fetterman, a rival of Jack’s, to implement the changes they want. Jack has also floated a bold new character, Jack Gates, a ruthless tycoon, but the Sherwoods refuse to promise to write him into the show, leaving Jack with a sense that his creative control is slipping.

On a weekend trip to Vermont, Laura breaks off with her boyfriend Dennis, the actor who plays Dr. Paul Kirkwood, and invites Jack along. As they load their luggage into the car, Dennis suddenly arrives to kiss Laura, and Jack looks up to see them kissing just as the trunk lid comes down and knocks him unconscious. He wakes up to find himself not in a prank-filled set, but in Ashford Falls Community Hospital, a real town that resembles a scene from his own show.

Believing he’s the target of a prank, Jack tries to prove his health to Dr. Kirkwood, and eventually he’s released. He’s soon intercepted by Janet DuBois, who believes he is Jack Gates, the man who could secure her miracle weight-loss formula. Janet, Mariel Hemingway, mistakes him for Gates and asks him for help, even as she accuses him of pretending to be someone he is not. She goes so far as to tell him to “write his way out,” a line that sticks with Jack as he discovers a startling power: when he writes a scene on his typewriter, it comes true.

With this newfound ability, Jack begins to operate as the “Gates” persona to win the heart of Rachel Hedison, Emma Samms. He rescues her from a dangerous situation, including a frightening liver of a horse incident, and even donates his own Ferrari to a charity, all while maintaining a complicated, growing attraction to Janet, who is trying to stay clear of the Hedison clan’s heavy-handed business moves. The Hedison family—Carter Hedison, Raymond Burr, and his sons Blake Dylan Baker and Ty Charles Rocket—are determined to control the formula, no matter the cost.

A rival version of Gates, played by Robert Wagner, appears in the town as well, but Jack sends him off on a business trip to Cleveland. As the episodes unfold, Jack’s power grows, and a party at the Hedison mansion becomes a turning point: Rachel has conspired with her family to obtain the secret formula that Janet entrusted to Jack. A drunken Jack, who has just begun to savor his dominance, breaks his own typewriter in frustration, muttering under his breath. At the party, the pretend Gates story takes a dramatic turn as Jack writes himself into a new role—concert pianist—and uses his fictional skills to save a choking guest with the Heimlich maneuver, embarrassing Paul Kirkwood in the process. Rachel is impressed by Jack’s abilities and begins to consider running away with him.

The plot thickens when Helen Caldwell, a nurse, reveals the shocking truth: Rachel and Janet were swapped at birth, making Janet the true daughter of Carter Hedison. Rachel’s plan to claim the formula escalates, and she triggers a crisis that sees Blake Hedison taking a gun and Rachel convincing Kirkwood to operate in a way that would end Janet’s life. Jack realizes that Rachel is dangerous, and his feelings for Janet deepen. He races to repair his typewriter and try to write Janet back to health, but Gates—furious at being sidelined and sent to Cleveland—shoots Jack with a shotgun, striking the typewriter.

Jack wakes back in New York, on the set of his own show, where Laura and Dennis tend him. He confronts Laura about her behavior and declares that she will be fired if she doesn’t play by his rules. The Sherwoods face his direct challenge, and Arlene, a nurse who has become entangled in the day’s chaos, chokes on a sandwich; Jack steps in with the Heimlich maneuver and secures Arlene’s promise to follow his lead. He then finds Louise in a delicatessen and uses his power to secure her the part of Janet, beginning a new relationship with her. The final scene returns to the real world of Beyond Our Dreams, with Jack and Louise skating together in Central Park as Jack narrates the ongoing events of his show, now under his own control and shaped by his extraordinary power to write reality.
