In 1939, José Garcés, a former Spanish Republican soldier imprisoned in a French camp, lifts his comrades’ morale by recounting his 1911 childhood in a northeastern Spanish village. As an eight‑year‑old rascal, he falls for neighbor Valentina, sends semaphore messages from his roof, writes poems, and lands in trouble, even killing her father’s pigeons. While the families stay in a decaying castle, a sympathetic priest introduces him to heroes, saints and poets, teaching him what true courage means.
