Vaidehi Kathirunthal

Vellaisamy is an unkempt derelict who lives by the village temple and ekes out a living with menial jobs. He hides an impressive singing ability that contrasts with his rough exterior. His days drift by with little regard for social norms, and his voice hints at a deeper, unspoken sadness.

Vaidehi is a young widow who resides in the village with her sorrowing, alcoholic father. Her social standing is fragile, and she faces the sting of stigma because of the circumstances surrounding her marriage. She clings to dignity and her talent despite the weight of others' pity.

Minutes after Vaidehi's marriage, the groom and his parents die in a boat accident. The tragedy triggers whispers across the village and marks Vaidehi as someone to blame.

The village ostracizes Vaidehi and denies her the chance to dance, despite her talent. Her father, though wealthy, sinks deeper into drinking as he copes with the stain on their family name.

Rumors spread when villagers spot Vellaisamy scribbling Vaidehi's name on temple walls. The act becomes a catalyst for gossip about their supposed connection.

Vaidehi confronts Vellaisamy about the wall inscriptions, seeking explanations. In reply, he reveals his tragic past and the other Vaidehi he once loved.

Flashback shows Vellaisamy living with his widowed mother in another village. His cousin Vaidehi, raised with him, once hoped to marry him, but he neglected her for fun.

Vellaisamy buys wedding jewels for his cousin Vaidehi and later tricks her by claiming he is engaged to someone else. Distraught, Vaidehi eats poisonous seeds and dies in his arms.

Weeks after Vaidehi's death, Vellaisamy's mother also dies. He donates his properties to the poor and moves to his present village in search of closure.

Now in the present village, Vellaisamy and Vaidehi share a mutual respect for each other’s melancholic lives. They decide to join forces to help Nataraj and Sengamalam.

They realize they must unite Nataraj and Sengamalam against the village’s wrath, particularly Sengamalam's ruthless brother, Vellikizhamai Ramasamy.

During the ensuing melee, Vellaisamy is killed by Ramasamy’s goons. The young lovers, Nataraj and Sengamalam, are finally united as Vaidehi is left to face the village’s judgment alone.

With Vellaisamy dead, Vaidehi remains alone, carrying the memories of the past and the village's lingering sorrow.
