During a World War II bombing mission, Steve Holloway and his crew crash. His copilot dies in the accident and the remaining crew—Benny, Andy, and Ed—fight to survive the wreck. The crash marks the violent beginning of their perilous ordeal.

The survivors take to a liferaft and drift for eight days. They endure hunger, thirst, and exposure while clinging to hope for rescue. The open ocean becomes a grim, isolating corridor toward an unknown fate.

A U.S. Navy flying boat spots the liferaft and rescues Steve and the others from the drifting sea. They are rushed to safety and taken to a hospital to recover. The relief of rescue contrasts with the looming questions about what they endured.

Steve awakens from a coma in a military hospital and begins telling doctors about the crash. He recounts how his copilot died and how they all survived the crash together. His tale foreshadows the even stranger events he experienced afterward.

Using a liferaft, the survivors reach an unknown island after their days adrift. The island presents a new and dangerous world populated by prehistoric creatures and a hidden Amazon tribe. The arrival marks the shift from survival at sea to confronting a far more surreal threat.

The island is inhabited by Amazons—cavewomen descended from Druids—and dinosaurs roam the landscape. Steve and the others attempt to explain their presence, but the Amazons interpret their appearance as a threat. The encounter deepens the mystery of this strange land.

Sandra, the Amazon leader, frees the aircrew from their cave cell, though she does not immediately reveal this to her followers. The act creates a fragile, uneasy truce between outsiders and islanders. Steve tries to secure a safe passage for his crew while avoiding confrontation.

The aircrew follow Sandra's suggested escape route but soon face dangerous obstacles—a giant bison, other prehistoric creatures, and flesh-eating plants. Realizing their odds are low, they decide to return to the Amazons for protection. The peril underscores the perils of island life.

While making their way back, they are attacked by a Glyptodont, a giant armadillo-like creature, and the Amazons rush to help. Myra, Valdra, Tennus, and Cleo reveal that Sandra’s release of the aircrew was a trap to dispose of them. The aircrew begin to realize that the island's factions are manipulating them.

The Neanderthals assault the group, killing Ed and threatening the others. The survivors defend themselves with pistols and drive away the attackers. The attack cements Steve's leadership amid growing desperation.

Steve recommends that Benny and Andy leave the island with the liferaft to ensure their survival, while he stays behind to help defend the Amazons. Benny and Andy refuse to abandon Steve, despite dwindling ammunition and rising danger. Steve's decision to stay shifts the group's dynamics and the mission's priority.

Steve leads the Amazons to their mountain temple, hoping the height will offer a defensive advantage. The structure turns out to be atop a volcanic peak, introducing a new, life-threatening risk. The plan to fortify the island's last stand intensifies the danger.

The mountain erupts violently, destroying Benny, Andy, and many Amazons. Steve barely escapes by climbing back to the liferaft as the island is consumed by lava and ash. The island's civilized refuge becomes a disaster in an instant.

Steve reaches the liferaft and escapes into the sea, returning to civilization. Doctors express disbelief at his incredible story, doubting the plausibility of his account. The medallion given by Sandra is sent for analysis, hinting at its Druic origin.

Back home, the doctors examine the medallion and confirm its Druids’ origin, validating Holloway’s tale of a lost island. The discovery provides tangible proof of the extraordinary journey. The film ends with a cautious acceptance that legends can harbor truth.
