In 1847, Paul van Riebeck travels from South Africa to Ireland to purchase horses for his Boer commandos. There he meets Katie O'Neill, the daughter of the horse trader, and their initial bond begins. He makes clear his vow to dedicate himself to the founding of a new country, which colors his coming romance with Katie.

The Great Famine devastates Ireland, and Squire O'Neill dies during this crisis. Katie's family and the local community face hunger and hardship, setting the stage for drastic life changes.

Katie marries Shawn Kildare and the couple emigrates to South Africa to join the settler movement. Their son is born during the perilous sea voyage, linking the family to the new land from the start. The voyage marks a turning point as Katie faces a future far from Ireland.

Katie, Shawn, Aggie O'Toole and other settlers begin an 800-mile trek to Hoffen Valley to claim free farmland. The journey tests their endurance as they cross harsh terrain and unknown dangers. Kurt Hout, son of the trek leader, becomes infatuated with Katie, complicating the group dynamics.

A scout reports thousands of Zulus camped ahead, forcing the group to brace for combat. Simon Hout negotiates briefly, but the Zulus attack; Paul and his men arrive and save the settlers, though Shawn is killed.

After the attack, Kurt reveals that Katie is his woman, triggering a love triangle with Paul. Katie tells Paul she loves him too, and Kurt's jealousy erupts into a violent confrontation that Paul defeats.

Lieutenant Christian orders Paul to rejoin his men or disband the commando. Katie resists, but Paul chooses to return to his unit, provoking Katie's public hatred.

Kurt remains involved with the farm and presses his suit on Katie, even as she is pregnant. A fierce storm strikes the valley, a lightning bolt topples a tree, injuring Kurt and causing the loss of his leg; the storm also wrecks the farm.

Katie gives birth to a second son, Paul, and with the help of native workers and Aggie begins rebuilding the farm after the storm's destruction.

An itinerant peddler warns that only gold will be accepted in trade, prompting Katie to trade her remaining possessions for gold. She eventually acquires a diamond and settles into a life of luxury in Cape Town in Paul's refurbished childhood home. Years pass, and she feels lonely without him.

Paul's dream of a Dutch Free State is realized, and he travels to Cape Town to seek representation. He is reunited with Katie, but their renewed romance is strained by quarrels, and Katie orders him to leave.

Katie loses her fortune and travels with her sons and Aggie to Kolesburg, hoping to find more diamonds. She discovers that Kurt now leads the outlaws who control the town.

Paul arrives with his men to retake Kolesburg; Kurt ambushes them and takes Paul's son hostage. Tschaka kills Kurt, and Paul slips a wedding ring on Katie's finger as they set out for Hoffen, renewing their life together.
