Howard Ratner, a New York-based jewelry store owner, finds himself trapped in a relentless cycle of gambling, debt, and personal turmoil. Living a double life—balancing his work, his mistress Julia, and his family—Howard constantly chases big wins to solve his mounting financial problems. In 2012, Howard acquires a rare uncut black opal from a small Ethiopian Jewish mining community, which he values at around one million dollars. He plans to auction this gem at a prestigious auction house, believing it will be his ticket to clear his debts and restart his life.
Howard’s ambitious plans are complicated by his addiction to gambling, which drives him to take reckless risks. He owes money to various bookies, including Arno, Eric Bogosian, and tries to pay them off by betting on the basketball games of Kevin Garnett, Kevin Garnett, a famous player who becomes involved in Howard’s schemes. Howard’s excitement grows when Kevin Garnett shows interest in the opal, which the basketball star believes might bring him good luck, so he takes the gem with him for a game, pawning KG’s championship ring as collateral for a bet.
Meanwhile, Howard’s family life is deteriorating. His wife Dinah, Idina Menzel, is frustrated with his absences and reckless behavior. She plans on telling their children about the divorce after Passover. Howard’s mistress Julia, who works at his jewelry store, is also embroiled in the chaos, and their relationship suffers numerous strains, especially after an altercation with The Weeknd, The Weeknd, when Howard discovers Julia and the artist in a bathroom, leading to a violent confrontation.
Howard’s attempts to recover the stolen opal from Kevin Garnett are thwarted multiple times. Demany, Lakeith Stanfield, delivers both good and bad news about the gem’s whereabouts, further escalating Howard’s desperation. As the auction date approaches, Howard’s financial situation spirals out of control, especially when the appraisal for the opal drops significantly from his anticipated value of a million dollars.
Despite his efforts, Howard’s plans unravel during the auction. The auction house values the opal at far less than expected, and Kevin Garnett arrives to bid on it himself. Howard’s attempt to outbid Garnett via his grandfather, Gooey, falls short, leaving Howard devastated and in deep debt. Outraged, Howard’s enemies, including Arno and Phil, [Chuck Shamata], exert their revenge, leading to a brutal confrontation in which Howard is beaten and humiliated.
Howard’s life continues to crumble as he returns to his office, bloodied and broken. His attempts to salvage the situation by selling his possessions fail, and he becomes increasingly desperate. Julia, after a heated argument, leaves him, and Howard discovers her departure with a note and keys to her apartment. His obsession and reckless behavior escalate as he tries to orchestrate a final gamble, betting everything on Kevin Garnett’s game that night.
Ultimately, Howard’s gamble pays off: Garnett wins big, and Howard’s large bet yields over a million dollars. Filled with hope, Howard calls Julia, suggesting a new start, and envisions a life of wealth and success. However, the climax is tragically abrupt when Arno and Phil, having tracked Howard, confront him at the casino. Outnumbered and threatened, Howard locks them inside a security vestibule, confident that his gamble will turn the tide.
The game unfolds in tense silence, and Howard’s bet appears to be winning dramatically. Julie, hiding from the goon, manages to place the bet, and Howard’s hopes are raised as he believes he is about to pull out of his downward spiral. Just as the victory becomes evident, Phil pulls out a gun and shoots Howard in the face, killing him instantly. In the chaos, Phil and his cohort rob Howard’s store, while Arno is shocked and tries to escape before being shot too.
As the dust settles, Julia leaves with the money, Dina decides to contact the police, and Howard dies on the floor—his life ending in tragedy amid his relentless pursuit of fortune. The camera focuses inward, revealing the uncut black opal resting within him, symbolizing the unfulfilled potential and the destructive cycle of greed and obsession that defined his life.
