A Moment of Romance

Wah Dee, Andy Lau, is a young triad gangster in Hong Kong who serves as the getaway driver in a jewelry-store robbery. When the raid goes wrong, he ends up with a hostage: a young woman named Jo-Jo, Jacklyn Wu Chien-Lien. A senior member of Wah Dee’s gang, Tommy Wong Trumpet demands that she be killed, but Wah Dee refuses and saves her. After Wah Dee is arrested, Jo-Jo refuses to identify him to the police. While Wah Dee tries to keep his distance, Jo-Jo expresses gratitude and affection, and he begins to fall for her.

Wah Dee hides in his grandfather’s home in Macau to protect Jo-Jo from the triads, but she finds him and they spend time there. Jo-Jo’s world shifts back to Hong Kong when she is forced to move to Canada with her parents, threatening to prosecute Wah Dee for abducting her. She promises to come with them and insists on meeting Wah Dee one last time. A letter expressing her no-regret love for him is left in his apartment after she has tended to a drunk Wah Dee and tidied his flat as well.

Trumpet arranges a meeting to cement his control over the gang after the death of their leader. A fierce confrontation erupts, and Brother Seven, Chu Tit-Wo, is killed by Trumpet and his partners. Wah Dee escapes with the help of his friend Rambo, Richard Ng Man-Tat, yet he is knocked from behind by Trumpet with a metal gas tank. Nosebleeds and shock drive Wah Dee to seek out Jo-Jo, and he arrives at her home to pick her up as she is on the verge of leaving.

They head to a church to plan their own wedding, outfits stolen from a boutique. While Jo-Jo prays, Wah Dee secretly leaves. He tracks Trumpet and two others out of a sauna with a knife, intent on ending the threat once and for all. With the help of Rambo, Trumpet and one of his mates are killed, but Wah Dee also dies on the street. In the aftermath, Jo-Jo is seen running along a highway in her wedding dress, searching for Wah Dee and wondering what comes next. The story lingers on the quiet ache of a love that arrived amid danger and a life spent on the edge.
