To combat the energy crisis, scientists develop genetically modified orchids as an alternative energy source. This innovation aims to provide a sustainable solution but symbolizes humanity's desperation and the lengths taken to adapt to dwindling resources.

At the age of 16, individuals labeled as 'Uglies' undergo a surgical procedure designed to eliminate imperfections. This operation is intended to create a uniform society, leading the populace towards conformity and the superficial ideal of beauty.

Tally and her best friend Peris, who have supported each other through their childhood scars, vow to retain their imperfections despite the impending transformations. Their bond represents a resistance against societal pressures to conform to the 'Pretty' standard.

On the day of their procedures, Peris goes first and disappears into the world of the Pretties. Tally feels abandoned and increasingly anxious about the changes in Peris, who seems to have left their shared past behind.
