Udaharanam Sujatha

Sujatha Krishnan, a high-school drop-out and a recent widow, works multiple low-paying jobs to fund her daughter Athira's schooling and the planned private coaching. She toils at apartment complexes, eateries, and small factories, trying to squeeze money for education. Her sole purpose is to see Athira secure a better future, even if it costs her comfort.

Sujatha confides her dilemma to her wealthy employer, George Paul. He proposes an uncanny plan: Sujatha enrolls in Athira's school to learn math and tutor her daughter. The idea is to bridge the gap by sharing the learning experience directly.

Sujatha joins Athira's class and begins learning math while tutoring Athira. Her presence embarrasses Athira but earns the goodwill of the school's kind principal and some classmates who notice her effort. Over time, Sujatha starts scoring well in math, surprising everyone who thought she couldn't learn.

A rivalry quickly forms between mother and daughter: if Athira scores more than Sujatha, Athira must leave school. Athira, feeling threatened, doubles down on her studies, hoping to outshine her mother. The tension exposes unresolved family dynamics.

In the next mathematics exam, Athira achieves a personal best of 58%, while Sujatha continues to perform, earning both pride and relief. Athira's attitude shifts as she starts taking academics more seriously. Sujatha rejoices but also recognizes the cost of the rivalry.

Sujatha visits the District Collector Deepa to discuss Athira's future and potential pathways. The Collector, sharing her own humble background, explains that she couldn't afford expensive private coaching either. She offers a compassionate perspective on social mobility.

Sujatha learns that Athira only performed well to avoid attending classes with her mother, not out of genuine interest. This revelation prompts Sujatha to rejoin the school regimen and double down on her tutoring efforts. The relationship begins to tilt toward reconciliation.

To fund both education and debts, Sujatha takes more jobs, working late into the night at small restaurants. Her increased workload stacks up savings but also leaves her exhausted and more distant from Athira. The economic pressure remains a central strain on their bond.

Athira secretly steals Sujatha's savings to buy expensive school bags and clothes, triggering humiliation from the landlady Thulasi whom Sujatha owes money to. Athira also suspects that her mother is prostituting herself, further driving a wedge between them.

With the theft and suspicions, trust between Sujatha and Athira collapses, their relationship plummets to its lowest point. They become distant and defensive, each misreading the other's actions. The family fractures just as Athira's exams approach.

While commuting, Sujatha is involved in a serious road accident and ends up hospitalized. Athira, visiting her mother, learns from a friend Rajeev that Sujatha isn't involved in prostitution but works hard at a restaurant. This revelation softens Athira's heart.

Moved by the truth, Athira asks for forgiveness and commits to studying hard from then on. The two reunite in their shared determination as Athira passes the SSLC exams with good marks, thanks in part to Sujatha's tutoring.

Athira fulfils her mother's dream by becoming a District Collector, explaining that she was inspired by her mother's example who now tutors economically backward students for free. The story closes on a note of empowerment, with the mother and daughter supporting education for all.
