Udaharanam Sujatha

Sujatha Krishnan, Manju Warrier, is a high-school dropout, a young widow, and a single mother who raises her daughter Athira in Thiruvananthapuram. To secure Athira’s future, she takes on a string of small, demanding jobs—at apartment complexes and in factories—so she can pay for schooling and the looming expense of private coaching for the SSLC exams. Athira Krishnan, Aditi Ravi, is not grateful; she is disinterested, often underperforming in class, and clings to the belief that she can never escape a life as domestic help like her mother.

Sujatha shares her worries with her affluent employer, George Paul, [Nedumudi Venu]. He responds with a surprising plan: Sujatha should enroll in Athira’s school to learn math and tutor Athira herself. The proposal embarrasses Athira, who feels exposed and undermined as her mother becomes a pupil in her own classroom. Only the school’s kind principal, Alencier Ley Lopez, seems to understand the situation. A quiet rivalry grows between them: if Athira scores more than Sujatha, Athira should leave the school. As Sujatha returns to the classroom, she begins to impress her peers and even posts strong math results, while Athira’s resentment deepens.

Athira’s pride and fear of losing control over her own narrative drive the tension, until Sujatha’s math progress becomes a symbol of resolve. After a period of study, Sujatha leaves the school content with Athira’s growing capability. Meanwhile, Sujatha tries to map out Athira’s future by seeking guidance from the District Collector Deepa, [Mamta Mohandas], a compassionate official who once faced similar financial hurdles in her own life. Deepa candidly shares that she too came from a low-income family and could not afford expensive private coaching, underscoring the real-world stakes behind Sujatha’s efforts.

Back home, Sujatha learns a painful truth: Athira’s good marks were earned partly because she did not want to attend classes with her mother, and the trust between them begins to fray. In response, Sujatha redoubles her efforts, taking on more work—late shifts in small restaurants and careful budgeting to protect her family’s finances and debts. The strain worsens when Athira suspects that Sujatha might be earning money through prostitution, a rumor that adds to the fracture in their bond. The tension peaks as the two drift apart, with the crowded city acting as a backdrop to their unraveling.

Then comes a turning point: while on the way to work, Sujatha is involved in a serious road accident and is severely injured. In the hospital, Athira finally learns the truth from her friend Rajeev, [Swaraj Gramika], who reveals that Sujatha’s hard work is genuine—she’s not engaged in prostitution, but toils day and night in a small restaurant to secure a better life for them. This revelation brings Athira back to her mother’s side, and she visits Sujatha in the hospital to apologize and pledge to study hard from that moment forward.

With renewed determination, Athira passes the SSLC exams with strong marks, sharing the achievement with Sujatha. The two celebrate not just the score, but the growth of their relationship and shared purpose. In a final, moving note, Athira explains that her inspiration to aim high in the Administrative Service comes from her mother, who now tutors economically backward students for free. The story closes on a hopeful cadence: a mother’s perseverance and a daughter’s diligence converge to turn a difficult past into a future where opportunity is earned through education and empathy.
