In 1805, the USS Essex sails as part of a blockade off Tripoli, aiming to curb pirates menacing American shipping. Consul William Eaton, Herbert Heyes, arrives aboard to recruit a small, covert commando for a high-stakes mission that could tilt the balance in North Africa. Lt. Presley O’Bannon, John Payne, and Lt. John Trippe, Lowell Gilmore, volunteer to raise a force to seize Derna, a strategic coastal town to the east, hoping to strike a decisive blow against the foe.

Hamet Karamanly, Phillip Reed, the exiled former Pasha of Derna, offers his loyalists to the Americans in exchange for restoration to his throne, pulled from exile by the promise of revenge and a chance to reclaim his homeland. Countess Sheila D’Arneau, Maureen O’Hara, stays close to the Pasha, and while many assume she is his mistress, she quietly schemes to persuade him to marry her, weaving herself into the unfolding expedition in a city that history would soon name Derna.

O’Bannon assembles a diverse, native-led force—Greeks, Turks, and Arabs—alongside a contingent of American soldiers and Navy midshipmen, a coalition designed to reinforce the Marines’ assault with numbers and local knowledge. The two leaders become wary allies: O’Bannon and the Countess D’Arneau meet and are drawn to each other, yet both resist admitting the attraction, choosing duty over desire in a volatile campaign. The Countess tries to sway Hamet, convincing him that the Americans plan to hand him over to his brother, a betrayal that would undo any chance of Derna’s independence. O’Bannon counters, steering Hamet away from paranoia and toward a united purpose.

D’Arneau defies expectations by joining the expedition from Alexandria, Egypt, traveling across the North African deserts but forced to accompany the camp followers, a decision that complicates loyalties and tests resolve. A perilous turn arises when a waterhole is poisoned, pushing the march to cross a dune sea to reach the next water source while racing against time and poison. The convoy endures a brutal sandstorm, a harsh test of endurance that tightens bonds and hardens the mission.

Meanwhile, Hamet’s brother presses a grim offer: half the kingdom in exchange for ridding Derna of the American intruders. The caravan presses on, arriving twelve days late to a silence where the American navy squadron under Commodore Samuel Barron is not yet visible, a moment that nearly sparks mutiny among the ranks. Hamet reveals the plan to his brother, and the Countess learns of it, racing to warn O’Bannon before the plan can unravel the alliance.

Ultimately, the attack on Derna unfolds as a bold, stealthy strike led by O’Bannon. The surprise assault secures the city, marking a turning point in the campaign and signaling a fragile but real partnership between American forces and Derna’s reclaiming factions. By the campaign’s end, Lt. O’Bannon and the Countess D’Arneau acknowledge their feelings and begin a tentative partnership that mirrors the tenuous alliance forged in battle. The story blends daring military maneuvering with political intrigue, salt wind and desert heat, and the enduring question of where loyalty lies when nations and people intersect on a distant shore.
