It is 1940, on the eve of the United States entering World War II. During a large-scale training exercise, eighteen U.S. Army Air Corps Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers simulate a retaliatory raid on Los Angeles. One aircraft crashes in the desert on the way back to base, and the bizarre discovery of a dead woman in the wreck raises immediate questions. The pilot responsible for the flight, Second Lieutenant Jefferson Young III, is accused of letting an unauthorized civilian passenger ride along, a charge that could end his promising military career. As the court martial commences, the board meticulously reviews his military record and personal history, trying to separate nerves of steel from reckless disregard.

The young aviation cadet at the center of the controversy is Jeff Young, a man shaped by a privileged upbringing on Long Island. He has joined the Army Air Corps and, during basic training in Texas, forms a tight bond with two fellow trainees: Al Ludlow, a skilled mechanic who stands out as the senior cadet, and Tom Cassidy, a talented former football star who dreams big as a pilot. The trio quickly becomes inseparable, sharing the grind of training and the hopes and fears that come with chasing a dangerous dream.

On the personal front, Jeff’s heart threads a complicated knot. He meets the free-spirited singer Sally Vaughn, a woman who once mattered to Al, and he also falls for photographer Carolyn Bartlett. Jeff’s affection for Carolyn grows into a serious commitment, even as his entanglements with Sally tug at his conscience. The early days are marked by a mix of camaraderie, competition, and quiet, unspoken worries about reputation and duty.

A pivotal moment arrives when a crash occurs while a fellow pilot, Jimmy Masters, is forced to crash to avoid disaster with Tom. Jeff and Al race to the burning wreck, yet Jeff freezes at a crucial moment, failing to intervene while Al saves Masters. The aftermath leaves Jeff overwhelmed with guilt and ashamed of his own fear, driving him toward dangerous decisions. He deserts, drinks, and seeks out Sally, hoping to escape the mounting pressure. Al intervenes, warning that Sally’s past could ruin Jeff’s future if it’s revealed. In response, Jeff proposes to Carolyn, a decision she accepts, seeking stability in a life he believes he can offer.

Another stage of the journey unfolds at a different airfield, where the three friends take part in a reckless low-altitude stunt that results in Tom’s fatal crash. The tragedy ends Al’s officer prospects, leading to his discharge from the Air Corps. The strain of the past now weighs heavily on their friendships, and Sally reveals to Al and Carolyn that she is pregnant with Jeff’s child. Jeff confesses that he continued seeing Sally despite the risk to his own career, because of a threat to his reputation. Carolyn ends her engagement with Jeff, while Al—partly out of affection and partly to shield Jeff—marries Sally. The tangle of loyalties becomes a heavy compromise the group cannot easily reconcile. A twist arrives when Sally admits to faking the pregnancy, and Al, though wounded by the deception, had already suspected the truth. Time marches on, and after graduation Jeff is slated to participate in a war-game exercise once more. He intersects with Al again, who has now become an enlisted crew chief on a B-17. The unit’s commander, Captain Mercer, learns of Al’s past and begins to push for him to be reinstated as an officer candidate and pilot—an effort that tests loyalties and the line between right and wrong in wartime discipline.

Then Sally returns, seeking help and offering a dangerous confession: she is wanted for the murder of a gangster friend, a crime she claims to have committed. Al provides financial help and promises to meet her again, but before anything can be resolved, Sally hides inside a bomber just as it takes off, with Jeff at the controls as pilot. The mission continues to its tense finish, and Mercer orders an emergency flare, a request that becomes a fuse for tragedy when a dangerous sequence unfolds. Al discovers Sally, and a heated argument ensues. An accidental flare ignition sends flames racing through the bomber, and Mercer is catastrophically burned as he falls from the aircraft. Al leaps after him with a parachute to rescue him, while Jeff manages a dangerous landing in the dark to retrieve the rest of the crew. Mercer’s condition becomes critical, and he urges immediate medical care, but Jeff defies orders to lift off again, a decision that leads to a fatal crash and Sally’s death.

Back on solid ground, Al testifies, laying bare the full chronology of events. The truth wins the day: Jeff is cleared of all charges and is reunited with Carolyn. In recognition of his earlier derailed ambitions, Al is reinstated as a pilot trainee, while Mercer eventually recovers physically, though the emotional costs linger for everyone involved.

This story unfolds with alternating currents of duty and personal choice, where loyalties are tested by past mistakes and the unforeseen pressures of impending war. It charts how friendship, romance, and ambition collide under the shadow of public scrutiny, and it examines how redemption can emerge even when paths are tangled with secrets and heartbreak.
