In 1981 Afghanistan, a Soviet tank unit launches a brutal assault on a Pashtun village sheltering mujahideen fighters. The attack peaks when the tank commander, Daskal, takes a wrong turn through a mountain pass and plunges into a narrow, blind valley. The village is left in ruins, and the human cost begins to reveal itself as the story follows both sides of the conflict with a steady, careful gaze.

Taj returns to the wreckage to discover his father and brother dead, the latter crushed beneath the very tank that hunted them. He rises as the village’s new khan, driven by a vow of revenge, and he leads a growing band of mujahideen into the valley, chasing the tank they nickname The Beast. The pursuit is as much about honor and retribution as it is about military objectives, and Taj’s leadership gives the fighters a clear purpose amid the wreckage and rubble.

On the Soviet line, the reluctant tank driver, Koverchenko, becomes a focal point of tension as he is educated in the Pashtun code of honor, Pashtunwali, by Afghan crewman Samad. The exchange deepens their humanity amid the brutality of the mission. Tragedy strikes when Daskal murders Samad in front of the others, a brutal act that tests the loyalties and morale of the crew and pushes Koverchenko toward a quiet resolve to defy orders when necessary.

Tensions escalate during a stop when Daskal accuses Koverchenko of mutiny and orders gunner Kaminski and loader Golikov to tie him to a rock and plant a grenade behind his head as a booby-trap for the mujahideen. The scene is brutal and harrowing, and the decision to leave a man behind is a grim test of leadership under pressure. The plan is thwarted when wild dogs attack, the grenade rolls away, and the explosion bursts the tension in a sudden, dangerous moment that shifts the crew’s dynamics.

Reunited with Taj, the mujahideen give Koverchenko food and shelter, and the two sides begin a cautious alliance. Koverchenko repairs a broken RPG-7, and a fragile partnership forms: he agrees to help Taj destroy the tank, bridging two very different worlds in a single, risky mission. The sense of possibility grows as both sides realize there may be room for a form of escape from the cycle of violence, even if it is temporary and fraught with peril.

Back in the valley, the tank crew realize they are trapped, and a Soviet helicopter appears, offering a risky rescue. Daskal refuses to abandon the tank, and instead has it refueled, hoping to push back toward the exit. The helicopter crew, however, has already paid a grim price: they drank from a waterhole poisoned with cyanide earlier in the mission and are found dead as the pursuit resumes.

The clash intensifies as the mujahideen and Koverchenko close in, and a tense exchange culminates when Koverchenko fires the RPG but only cripples the tank’s main gun. Desperation spikes when the village women, armed with explosives, blow up the cliff-side, sending massive boulders crashing onto the tank and sealing its fate. With the vehicle crippled, Koverchenko sets fire to the leaking fuel, forcing the crew to abandon ship. He pleads nanawatai on their behalf, and Taj reluctantly agrees, halting the cycle of vengeance long enough to pursue a different path for a moment.

Kaminski and Golikov flee on foot, but Daskal is hunted down by the village women and murdered; his bloodied uniform is carried back to Taj as a trophy of the day’s brutal justice. In the final turns of the story, Koverchenko is rescued by a Soviet helicopter. As he is hoisted away, he salutes Taj and brandishes the jezail musket Taj had gifted him, a tangible symbol of the uneasy ties formed in the valley. The helicopter carries him over the rugged Afghan landscape, leaving the fate of the expedition open to interpretation but underscoring a moment of unlikely humanity amid the war’s devastation.
