Too Late the Hero

On a remote Pacific island scarred by World War II, the landscape is cleaved in two: dense jungle shelters one side while the other is dominated by a stark, open field that serves as a tenuous frontier between Japanese forces and Allied outposts. The island’s silence is broken only by the distant thrum of encroaching aircraft and the nervous murmur of soldiers who know that any misstep could summon a deadly response. Within this precarious setting, a British commando unit is dispatched on a covert operation intended to silence an enemy radio post and buy precious time for an approaching convoy.

The mission drags the reluctant Sam Lawson—a U.S. Navy Japanese‑language interpreter who has spent the war away from the front—into the heart of the conflict. His commanding officer, Captain John G. Nolan, abruptly cancels Lawson’s leave and orders him to join the British infantry team stationed in the New Hebrides.
