During a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, a girl becomes the latest victim of the deadly virus XB. The investigation is led by the brilliant but under-the-radar scientist known as Dr. Clinton Earnshaw, who has been tracking the outbreak but can only diagnose it without a clear cure. To accelerate the search, the federal government assigns him Jeff Adams, a resourceful man with no formal medical or scientific training, yet with an instinct for solving problems on the fly.
Adams’ unconventional usefulness becomes apparent when he recalls a long-ago virus with eerily similar characteristics and points to its origin: Wood’s Fever, uncovered by Dr. Joshua Henderson. The two men realize that Henderson’s notes were wiped out in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, leaving only a single artifact behind—a gold pocket watch that hints at a key to the mystery.
To unlock the past, Earnshaw and Adams are introduced to Dr. Amos Cummings, a former NASA physicist and Nobel laureate, and his colleague Dr. Helen Sanders. The pair have been experimenting with time travel and reveal their drastic plan: to send Earnshaw and Adams back in time to discover Henderson’s cure for Wood’s Fever. The mission requires period-accurate gear, a small handheld microscope, and a portable centrifuge, all carefully packed as they receive a stark briefing on the dangers of leaping through eras.
With the door to the vault opened, they step into a room that looks out on an endless, cloud-filled sky and enter a world far from their own. The landing is not as precise as hoped: they touch down a day and a half later in the center of Chicago, rather than near Henderson’s home outside the city, leaving them with just under three days to find the cure. They assume identities as physicians from Washington, DC, and set out to locate Henderson at his hospital, where he confesses he does not understand why some patients survive his treatment. His approach relies on palliative drugs taken with homemade elderberry wine.
As Earnshaw and Adams conduct their own tests on Henderson’s patients, they share the same puzzlement about recovery. A crucial moment comes when Adams, attempting to obtain a blood sample, fears he has caused a fatal outcome but discovers the patient would not have died even without intervention. A human connection deepens when the two doctors become entangled with Henderson’s life, and a budding romance grows between Jane Henderson and Earnshaw.
The plot thickens as the Great Fire rages, leaving them no closer to a cure. When Adams decides to seize Henderson’s paperwork and hurry back to the future, a suspicious assistant interrupts with a telegram from Washington, revealing that Adams and Earnshaw were not sent by the government. The revelation adds pressure and urgency to their mission, but Earnshaw notices a vital clue: the wine Henderson crafts contains the actual cure. The only patients who succumbed to Wood’s Fever were those who refused to drink it, so the race becomes a desperate scramble to recover the last bottle.
To convince Henderson of their authenticity, Earnshaw and Adams display Henderson’s own futuristic microscope and centrifuge, and they recite the inscription inside the pocket watch, effectively proving that they are indeed from the future. Despite knowledge of their fated deaths, Henderson and his niece stay to tend a trapped patient, and both perish in an explosion triggered by the desperate scenario around them. The time travelers manage to secure the wine’s cure and return to the present just in time to save lives.
In 1976, Henderson’s elderberry wine saves Earnshaw and the Mardi Gras girl who was struck in the outbreak, underscoring the extraordinary arc of their journey. Afterward, the travelers visit the graves of Henderson and his niece in Chicago, leaving a President’s letter of thanks on Henderson’s grave as a tribute. Earnshaw’s final reflection reveals the bittersweet truth: loving Jane meant he “fell in love with history,” a sentiment that now defines his life’s purpose.
“fell in love with history.”
