In the 1950s, free-spirited Caroline Wolff is eager to plant her roots and find a stable partner who can create a nurturing environment for both her and her young son, Tobias “Toby” Wolff. Her journey takes her to Seattle, Washington, where she meets Dwight Hansen, a man whose initial charm seems to fit her ideal. However, as time passes, Caroline’s hopeful outlook begins to crumble when she uncovers the unsettling truth that lies beneath Dwight’s polished exterior—he harbors a dark reality marked by emotional, verbal, and physical abuse directed towards Toby during her moments of absence.

Despite her reservations, Caroline finds herself unable to sever ties with Dwight, ultimately moving with him to his home in Concrete, a small town surrounded by the stunning North Cascades Mountains. As the years roll on, Dwight’s domineering behavior becomes increasingly evident, yet Caroline persists amidst the chaos, enduring the toxic dynamics of their relationship. Simultaneously, Toby forms a friendship with Arthur Gayle, an outsider in their school who is grappling with his own identity and sexuality. The two boys, bound by their shared dreams of escaping the constraints of Concrete, find solace in each other; Toby hopes to reconnect with his older brother, Gregory, on the East Coast, while Arthur aspires for a life beyond their small town’s limits.

As tensions increase, Toby devises a plan to secure scholarships at prestigious preparatory schools in Pennsylvania. With Arthur’s aid, they fabricate Toby’s academic records, and after encountering several rejections, their efforts culminate in Toby finally obtaining a full scholarship to The Hill School in Pottstown, near Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Caroline’s patience with Dwight reaches a breaking point when she takes action to protect Toby from a violent outburst, compelling both of them to escape their troubled marriage and leave the confines of Concrete behind, in search of a brighter future.
