The Wind

American novelist Sian Anderson travels from Los Angeles to the secluded Greek island of Monemvasia to write her next mystery. She rents Elias Appleby’s home and is warned that a strong wind will sweep the night from the sea, urging her to stay indoors. The warning foreshadows danger that will unfold in the stormy hours ahead.

After Elias leaves, Sian is introduced to Phil, a gruff American handyman who also lives on the property. The tense encounter establishes Phil as a threatening presence in the isolated house. The uneasy dynamic between Sian and Phil sets the stage for later conflict.

That night, Elias attempts to fire Phil, but Phil murders him in cold blood. His death occurs offscreen at first, heightening the sense that danger lurks within the house. Sian remains unaware of the immediate violence while the storm rages outside.

From a distance, Sian notices Phil burying something on the grounds and investigates the home to discover Elias’s corpse. The grim discovery confirms the murder and escalates her fear. With the storm isolating the island, there is no easy path to help.

Terrified, Sian phones her boyfriend John in Los Angeles and asks him to report the crime. She also tries to contact Elias’s wife, but a language barrier prevents communication. The inability to summon local authorities heightens her vulnerability in the stormbound estate.

Phil breaks into the house through the basement, armed with a sickle, and threatens Sian. She traps him by closing the basement hatch and dousing him with kerosene, while the generator flickers on and off. The claustrophobic confrontation marks the night’s escalating danger.

When Elias’s wife arrives, Phil murderously stabs her to death, deepening the bloodshed inside the house. Sian, hiding upstairs, witnesses the violence and realizes the net is closing around her. The body count climbs as the storm rages outside.

Kesner, an American marine captain stranded by the weather, volunteers to help Sian. Phil infiltrates the house and murders Kesner, adding to the mounting bodies. With each passing moment, the danger becomes more personal for Sian.

Sian discovers Elias, his wife, and Kesner have been murdered and stuffed into a closet. The gruesome discovery confirms that no external help will arrive and that she must rely on herself. The sense of claustrophobic peril deepens as the wind howls outside.

Sian finds the locked hunting closets and arms herself with a rifle. She steels herself for a final stand against Phil, shifting the dynamic from survival against an intruder to armed confrontation. The battle lines inside the house are drawn.

Sian shoots at Phil from a second-story window as he nears. He climbs toward her balcony, and she triggers a wind-driven booby trap by a rope: she slashes it, the shutter swings out, and Phil is forced toward his sickle and impales himself. The immediate threat seems to end as dawn approaches.

Believing Phil is dead, Sian flees through the house and tumbles into a corridor where the ground gives way, sending her into an underground cavern. There she discovers a skeleton among the ruins of the ancient passages. She regains her footing and begins the arduous climb back toward daylight.

At dawn, Sian emerges from the caverns onto a rock wall along the coast and spots a young honeymooning couple driving along. She calls out to them, but they do not hear or see her, leaving her voice to echo off the stone. The island’s beauty contrasts with her perilous solitude.

Phil, having survived his earlier fall, appears on the cliffside and chases Sian through winding paths. A gust of wind hurls him off balance, and he loses his footing, plummeting to his death. Sian continues fleeing along the cliff, stunned but alive.

With Phil dead and help still distant, Sian faces an uncertain future as she crawls toward safety and the rising sun. The island’s isolation has exacted its toll, and she moves forward with the weight of a night of terror behind her. The final image leaves her small against the vast sea-washed landscape.
