Josef K. is a meticulous bank employee sharing a crowded, aging apartment with a handful of lodgers. His routine is punctuated by the quiet presence of his landlady, Mrs. Grubach, and the lightly enigmatic neighbor, Miss Bürstner, whose casual remarks betray as much confusion as they offer comfort. Even his coworkers, gathered like silent witnesses, reinforce the sense that ordinary people have become unwilling participants in a surreal drama.
