The Thaw

The film opens with a documentary-style briefing led by Dr. David Kruipen about a rapidly unfolding pandemic on Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic, where 400 people have died and 10,000 are infected. A flashback then shows the team tranquilizing a polar bear and uncovering the frozen remains of a woolly mammoth, a discovery that hints at something extraordinary and dangerous beneath the ice.

The team’s work moves back to the research station, where David calls his daughter Evelyn Kruipen and pleads for her to visit. Their relationship has been strained since Evelyn’s mother passed away, adding emotional weight to the mission. Joining the expedition are three students—Ling Chen, Federico Fulce, and Atom Galen—who are selected to assist the scientists, while Evelyn decides to accompany them, drawn by curiosity and unresolved family ties.

Tensions rise as the group begins to fall ill with a strange, spreading illness. David instructs helicopter pilot Bart not to bring Evelyn to the station, but she insists on coming, forcing Bart to defy orders to keep the group together. In a stunning turn, Jane, the project’s lead scientist, shoots and seemingly kills David and another researcher, sending shockwaves through the team. The students uncover the corpse of the polar bear, and Bart is bitten by a bug after handling it, signaling the start of a frightening chain of infections.

Late at night, Evelyn is awakened by the approach of an all-terrain vehicle. Investigating, she finds Jane aboard the helicopter, having sabotaged the controls to prevent any easy escape. Ling awakens with numerous bug bites on her face and torso, and Jane dies in Evelyn’s arms. Recognizing that Ling is seriously ill, Federico calls in a rescue helicopter to extract the group, but the situation is far from simple.

In a desperate bid to uncover the source of the illness, Evelyn and Atom discover eggs in the brain of the mammoth, suggesting a mysterious pathogen is linked to their Arctic find. Convinced that the entire group has been exposed, Evelyn decides to cancel the rescue and quarantine everyone until a better-prepared team can arrive. Federico, deeply infected, descends into rage and destroys the radio, severing any chance of a quick exit.

As they race against time, Bart’s arm bite worsens, turning into a dangerous infection. Evelyn and Atom amputate his arm at the elbow to slow the spread, and the team resolves to destroy the facility and wait out the danger in a helicopter. Ling, meanwhile, is overwhelmed by bugs that infiltrate the station through the ventilation system, and Bart discovers that the amputation did little to halt the infection. He chooses to stay behind with Ling, and the two deliberately overdose on morphine to sleep through the swarm.

Tensions escalate as Federico, overwhelmed by fear and illness, launches another assault—this time aiming at Evelyn and Atom. David intervenes, shooting Federico, and urges the group to destroy the research station as a precaution. In a troubling moment, Evelyn discovers a video David recorded in which he reveals his plan: he infected himself deliberately to unleash the bugs as a grim lesson about the consequences of global warming on humanity.

A rescue helicopter arrives to extract David, Evelyn, and Atom, but the trio is captured and then manages to escape. At one point, Atom clings to the helicopter’s skid in a last-ditch effort to force a landing, but is knocked free during the turbulence and suffers mortal injuries. As the helicopter fights to stay aloft, Evelyn shoots at it, causing it to crash into a nearby gasoline-slicked building. The blast kills David and the crew, and Atom dies in Evelyn’s arms during the chaotic aftermath.

The following day, a new rescue team surveys the wreckage and finds Evelyn, the lone survivor among the original group. A radio report later confirms her account of the events. In a final, unsettling moment, a hunter’s dog tears into a dead bird that had fed on the mammoth’s infected tissue, and bugs begin to emerge from the bird’s body. The hunter drives toward a large city, suggesting that the threat may spread beyond the Arctic as the credits roll.
