The Irishman

In the 1950s, Frank Sheeran starts his career as a truck driver, delivering meat shipments within Philadelphia. He begins to get involved in the local underworld by selling some of his shipments to gangster Skinny Razor. His actions attract attention from the crime figures operating in the city.

After a theft accusation from his delivery company, Sheeran's case is dismissed thanks to union lawyer Bill Bufalino. Bill introduces Sheeran to his cousin Russell Bufalino, the head of a prominent crime family, who starts employing Sheeran for various illegal activities, including contract killings. This marks Sheeran's entry into organized crime.

Sheeran is introduced to Jimmy Hoffa, the leader of the Teamsters, who has close ties with the Mafia. Hoffa struggles with internal union conflicts and federal investigations, while Sheeran becomes his trusted bodyguard. Hoffa's influence grows, making him a significant figure in organized labor.

Following John F. Kennedy's election, Robert F. Kennedy, as Attorney General, forms a squad to target Hoffa. Hoffa is arrested and convicted in 1964 for jury tampering, weakening his position while Baldwin's power within the union increases. Sheeran remains close to Hoffa during this period.

Hoffa's sentence is commuted in 1971 by President Nixon, but he is banned from union activities until 1980. He plans a comeback to regain control of the Teamsters, which raises concern among the Mafia leaders, especially Russell. Sheeran continues to be Hoffa’s key confidant and bodyguard.

Hoffa openly opposes the Mafia's influence within the union and warns Sheeran that he knows secrets that could jeopardize everyone if revealed. Russell Bufalino urges Sheeran to confront Hoffa, fearing Hoffa's independence might threaten their criminal interests.

During a dinner in Sheeran’s honor, Russell tells him that the Mafia leaders have decided Hoffa must be killed. Sheeran is reluctantly chosen as the triggerman to carry out Hoffa’s murder, as the dons see him as the only one capable of executing the hit.

Sheeran flies to Detroit and meets Hoffa, who is unaware that he is being set up. Hoffa is led to a house under the pretense of a meeting but quickly realizes it’s a trap. Sheeran shoots Hoffa at point-blank range, killing him and leaving the body at the scene.

Following Hoffa’s murder, Sheeran, Russell, Tony Pro, and others avoid immediate prosecution for the killing by invoking their Fifth Amendment rights. They are eventually convicted of unrelated charges and serve time in prison, with Sheeran being the only one to survive his sentence.

Sheeran is released from prison and lives in a nursing home, where he seeks reconciliation with his daughters. Peggy Sheeran, suspecting his involvement in Hoffa’s death, cuts all contact with him, leaving their relationship strained and distant.

While in the nursing home, Sheeran converses with a Catholic priest who offers him forgiveness for crimes committed or denied. Sheeran asks the priest to leave the door slightly open, symbolizing an unresolved sense of guilt and longing for redemption.
