In a quiet Arizona town, the new kid Kyle Barrett finds an unlikely ally in Jason McIntyre after stepping in to defend him from a group of bullies, and the two quickly forge a strong friendship. Jason then takes Kyle to the local airport where his uncle Ed Thomas works, and the two sneak a peek at a few planes before Jason leads them to a mysterious hangar housing a larger silver twin‑engine airliner. Thrilled by the prospect of adventure, they clamber inside, explore the cockpit, and dream of more escapades to come.
As they mill about, the hangar doors unexpectedly swing open and the boys duck to avoid trouble, hide in the rear baggage compartment, and watch as the plane is started and heads toward takeoff. During a layover at an unknown airport, a small bag is tucked into their compartment. The plane lifts again, and they soon discover that the bag contains a bomb. They burst into the cabin to report their discovery, only to find the plane seemingly empty. Kyle hurls the bomb out the door while Jason climbs into the cockpit to steer the craft away from a mountainside, and together they manage to bring the plane to a safe landing. The pair are hailed as heroes in the news, but their triumph draws them into a far bigger trouble: they’ve stumbled into a criminal scheme to steal millions from the mob.
Their inadvertent involvement lands them at a mansion where they square off in a gunfight with Angelo Esposito. There they meet Angelo’s brother Silvio Esposito and his partner Lenny Drake, who soon reveal themselves as the very men on the plane. After Angelo thanks the boys for saving his aircraft, he orders Silvio and Lenny to take them home.
On the ride back, Jason uses Kyle’s walkie‑talkie and catches Lenny’s ear, provoking a confrontation. Silvio berates Lenny for his recklessness and betrayal, and a confrontation erupts when Lenny shoots Silvio and bolts, triggering a chase that ends with Kyle being captured. Lenny orders Ed to fly higher so he can escape with the money, and Kyle warns that Angelo will punish him, prompting Lenny to try tossing Kyle from the plane. Ed twists the controls to shield them, buying time for a physical struggle that leaves Lenny beaten.
With Ed at the controls, Jason manages to seize the plane, and Kyle tosses the money out, much to Lenny’s frustration. The trio then makes a dramatic exit: Ed secures a parachute while Jason takes the helm and the two jump out just in time. Ed, equipped with a parachute, saves Kyle from a fall, and they land safely as a helicopter borne by Angelo appears, seeking their safety. Lenny, still aboard, crashes the plane into a mountainside, resulting in an explosion that ends his threat. Silvio, badly injured, succumbs soon after, leaving Angelo to confront the remaining truth of the ordeal.
Jason returns home and his Grandpa Thomas presents him with a medal for bravery. In the meantime, one of Angelo’s guards, Manny, and another guard, Sal, briefly threaten a local bully as a show of force. In a final, sunny epilogue, Angelo grants Kyle and Jason a new plane as a reward, and they, along with Ed and Kyle’s mom Samantha Barrett, fly off into the sunset.
