The Wedding Banquet

Gao Wai-Tung is a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant living happily in Manhattan with his gay Jewish partner, Simon. Despite his content life, he has yet to come out to his traditional parents in Taiwan, who are eager to see him married and start a family.

Wai-Tung's parents hire a dating service to find him a suitable partner, intensifying the pressure on him to marry. In a desperate attempt to stall, Wai-Tung and Simon create outrageous demands for his future bride including an opera singer with several academic qualifications.

To their surprise, the dating service finds a candidate named Wei-Wei who meets almost all of their demanding criteria. Wai-Tung explains the situation to her, revealing that she, too, is hiding a relationship from her own traditional parents.

With Simon's encouragement, Wai-Tung decides to marry Wei-Wei, an artist who needs a green card. They orchestrate this scheme not only to help Wei-Wei but also to placate Wai-Tung's parents during their impending visit.

Before Wai-Tung's parents arrive in the U.S., Simon and Wei-Wei prepare by hiding all traces of Wai-Tung's gay lifestyle. They replace gay imagery in their home with traditional Mandarin decorations to avoid raising suspicion.

When Mr. and Mrs. Gao arrive, they bring gifts and $30,000 to fund an extravagant wedding for their son, believing he has a wealthy fiancée. Wai-Tung struggles to maintain the facade due to his father’s recent health scare, having just recovered from a stroke.

Wai-Tung announces his plan to marry Wei-Wei at a Justice of the Peace, which makes his mother heartbroken, especially upon realizing Wei-Wei's socioeconomic status. This emotional revelation prompts Wai-Tung to consider a more elaborate wedding celebration.

After the courthouse wedding, Wai-Tung accepts an offer for a lavish wedding banquet from his father's former batman. The banquet brings family and friends together, culminating in a party that leads to a surprising situation for the newlyweds.

After the raucous celebration, it is revealed that Wei-Wei is pregnant, which creates tension between Wai-Tung and Simon. This unexpected development strains their relationship, igniting significant conflict among the trio.

In a moment of anger, Wai-Tung admits the truth about his sexuality to his mother, who is shocked. However, Mr. Gao observes more than he lets on, demonstrating his awareness of his son's relationship with Simon.

Mr. Gao recognizes Simon's sacrifices for Wai-Tung and offers him a hongbao, symbolizing his acceptance of their relationship. He asks Simon to keep their secret from others, emphasizing the need for the sham marriage to ensure a grandchild.

On their way to an abortion appointment, Wei-Wei has a change of heart and decides to keep the baby. She asks Simon to stay in Wai-Tung's life and to help raise the child, further complicating their unconventional family dynamic.

At the airport, as Mr. and Mrs. Gao prepare to return to Taiwan, Mr. Gao warmly acknowledges Simon, signaling his acceptance. Mrs. Gao bids a fond farewell to Wei-Wei, marking the beginning of their new, unconventional family unit.
