The Unholy Garden

Hunt and his uncouth American partner Smiley Corbin rendezvous at a rundown hotel in the Sahara, a hideout beyond the reach of French authority. Hunt is irritated when Smiley reveals that he lost the robbery proceeds after meeting a dame. They begin to plan their next heist in the desert heat.

Hunt learns that Smiley's weakness for women caused the latest robbery proceeds to vanish after he met a dame. He expresses annoyance, but the situation pushes Hunt to pursue a new target with urgency. The rheostat of trust among the criminals begins to strain.

Hunt identifies the blind, elderly Baron de Jonghe as the target who hides a cache of stolen money. He plans to discover the money's hiding place by courting Camille, the Baron's attentive relative, to get close to the prize.

Hunt begins courting Camille to gain access to the Baron's wealth, exploiting her inexperience. Camille becomes a focal point in Hunt's scheme as he uses romance to navigate the Baron's world.

Smiley falls for Eliza Mowbray and reveals Hunt's plan to her. Word spreads among the hotel's criminals that a score is in play, and appetite for a quick payout grows throughout the shadowy community.

Hunt privately suggests to pairs of criminals that the money would be better divided among three partners. The disparate fugitives and murderers agree to this arrangement, tightening the noose around anyone trying to claim the entire prize.

Alfred, the Baron's brother, arrives with a promise of amnesty if the money is returned. De Jonghe refuses, insisting the wealth is his by right and that Camille should have it after he is gone.

Hunt sneaks into De Jonghe's room, searches the chimney, and locates the money. He pockets the loot and returns the metal box to its place, then slips away to avoid suspicion.

De Jonghe grows suspicious and returns to his room to retrieve the box. A crook shoots him dead and flees with the box, unaware that it is now empty. The other residents quickly learn something has gone wrong.

The gunshot alarms the residents, and they quickly realize Hunt has double-crossed them. Smiley holds the others at bay with his gun while Hunt makes his escape with Camille and the money, maintaining a fragile veneer of control.

Before fleeing, Hunt gives Camille the money and sends her to safety with Alfred de Jonghe. He warns her not to be found in the company of a fugitive, hoping she will be better off away from the chase.

Hunt and Smiley drive away; the loot is gone and the plan collapses into a desperate escape. Smiley asks about his share, and Hunt answers with a final, telling gesture by presenting him a flower and remarking that he met a dame.
