On May 19, the day of Richard Dane [David Manners]’s twenty-first birthday, the man who raised him, Richard Carewe [Conway Tearle], has long planned a stable future for his ward by arranging a match with Phyllis Ericson [Loretta Young], the daughter of his housekeeper. Phyllis, however, harbors her own feelings for Carewe and has no real interest in Dane, setting the stage for a quietly tense triangle that will complicate every promise made that day.

Carewe schemes around a planned birthday surprise, hoping to cement the connection between Dane and Phyllis, but Dane never shows up. Instead, he slips away to a nightclub to see his new girlfriend, Kara [Myrna Loy], a glamorous performer who works under the stage name The Firefly and has a reputation as a calculating gold-digger. After a late, drink-fueled return home, Dane drops a letter—addressed to “Richard”—that he had received from Kara, a note that becomes the hinge on which everything tilts. Early the next day, the housekeeper finds the note and shows it to Phyllis, who in turn presents it to Carewe. Believing the message concerns Dane, Carewe deftly preserves the deception by posing as the author of the note, a mislead that deepens Phyllis’s ache because she loves him and fears the truth.

Confronted with the note, Dane’s jealousy boils over. He resolves to elope with Kara, who accepts because she thinks he is rich and ready to supply her future. After their wedding, Kara’s illusion is shattered when she discovers Dane is not wealthy. The shock fades quickly into cold disdain, and she makes it clear she does not want him around. Meanwhile, Carewe remains unaware that Kara has already married Dane, and in a bid to salvage a public façade, he offers Kara five thousand dollars to pretend to be his lover in front of others.

Phyllis, meanwhile, makes a painful descent into the nightclub world as she witnesses Kara’s public attentions to Carewe. The sight nearly breaks her heart, and she leaves the club with a heavy sense of solitude and betrayal. Later, Dane returns home overwhelmed by the revelations and confesses everything to Phyllis, laying bare the tangled web of lies and desires that pulled them all into hardship. In response, Phyllis, understanding the truth at last, confesses her own love for Carewe when he comes back, and the two share a quiet, meaningful reconciliation. As the confession blooms, Carewe’s own feelings crystallize, and he finally embraces Phyllis, signaling a hopeful turn for all who have been drawn into this storm of loyalty, desire, and mistaken loyalties.
