Beauty for Sale

Letty Lawson, Madge Evans, a small-town woman, moves to New York City and ends up living in a boarding house run by Mrs. Merrick, played by May Robson. Desperate for opportunity, she pleads with her friend and Mrs. Merrick’s daughter, Una Merkel Carol, to help her land a job at an exclusive beauty salon owned by Madame Sonia Barton, portrayed by Hedda Hopper. The salon’s atmosphere warns of temptation and danger, and both Carol and Letty’s brother, Edward Nugent Bill, caution her that this world may not suit a young woman of good character. Yet Letty remains determined to prove herself and seize a chance at a better life.

After earning a chance to work, Letty is sent on a house call to attend to the spoiled, scatterbrained Mrs. Sherwood, Alice Brady. When Letty returns, her hat has been chewed up by Mrs. Sherwood’s Pekingese, a small mishap that foreshadows the social knots she will encounter. Mr. Sherwood, the husband, Otto Kruger himself, takes an immediate liking to Letty and invites her to replace the damaged hat. The two cross paths again during a rainstorm, and Letty, anxious in the moment, seeks the comfort of Sherwood’s arms. This encounter sparks a romance between them, though it remains discreet and essentially aboveboard for a time.

Parallel to this romance, Carol enjoys a wealthy, indulgent older boyfriend, Freddy Gordon, played by Charley Grapewin. At the same time, another salon employee, Jane, secretly sees Burt Barton, the mining engineer son of Madame Sonia, Phillips Holmes. As Letty’s feelings for Sherwood deepen, he finally asks her to take their relationship to the next stage, but she asks for a week to think it over, weighing the implications with care.

The personal dramas intensify as Carol prepares to leave for Paris with Freddy, while Letty learns that Burt plans to marry Jane the day after she confided she was pregnant. The shock of Burt’s broken promise and Jane’s suicide by jumping from a window casts a long shadow over Letty and reinforces the cynicism creeping into her outlook, shaped by the losses around her and the betrayals she witnesses. The consequences of these revelations push Letty toward a more calculating stance, and she declines Sherwood’s advances, choosing instead to enter an engagement with Bill, her steadfast brotherly love.

Letty’s path then collides with Mrs. Sherwood’s own plans: at the request of Madame Sonia, Letty is taken to Sonia’s home, where the truth about an impending divorce and the appetite for a new start begins to unfold. Mrs. Sherwood announces she intends to divorce her husband so she can marry Robert Abbott, the architect behind a grand new country mansion she has commissioned. She vows she will ask for no alimony, a stance that enrages Sherwood, who remains furious yet seemingly resigned to letting his wife go.

In the film’s emotional and social finale, Carol and Freddy’s Parisian departure, the looming divorce of the Bartons, and Letty’s own evolving sense of loyalty all converge when a real estate sale exposes the true state of the Sherwood marriage. The sale is halted as Letty races to the offices to stop the disposition of the property, driven by a rekindled sense of love and purpose. In the end, Letty is reunited with her chosen partner, a reaffirmation of love found in the midst of societal pressures and personal sacrifice. The story closes on a note of hopeful resilience, with Letty embracing a future that reflects her growth from a cautious bystander to a woman who chooses her own happiness.
