Emanuel, still burdened by the profound guilt and sorrow stemming from her mother’s tragic death during childbirth, unexpectedly finds comfort in a budding romance with Claude, a 17-year-old with whom she navigates the thrilling yet complicated landscape of first love. Living in the same household as her father and her stepmother, Janice, Emanuel’s daily life is fraught with tension and discomfort, particularly due to Janice’s presence, which serves as a constant reminder of the mother she lost.
Things take a turn when a newcomer named Linda, who bears a striking resemblance to Emanuel’s deceased mother, moves in next door. Drawn to Linda like a moth to a flame, Emanuel’s fascination grows, prompting her to step into the role of babysitter for “baby Chloe.” To her shock, however, she learns that this “baby” is merely a lifelike doll.
As Emanuel and Linda’s bond strengthens, her internal conflict intensifies; she grapples with her urge to shield Linda from the painful truth while simultaneously yearning for her own sense of closure. Complications arise when her best friend, Arthur, offers to care for the doll while Linda joins Emanuel’s birthday dinner. This turmoil escalates further when Claude proposes to landscape Linda’s yard, raising Emanuel’s alarm about potential threats to her newly formed relationship with Linda.
Emanuel’s life spirals as she confronts the realities of her emotions and the secrets she’s kept hidden. A climactic birthday dinner brings tensions to a boiling point, at which time Janice lays bare Emanuel’s troubled past to Linda, triggering a cascade of events that culminate in a heart-wrenching confrontation.
After the dust settles, Emanuel finds herself alone with “baby Chloe” when Linda and Arthur return from their excursion. A miscommunication leads Linda to believe her doll has been swapped for the real baby, igniting a desperate search and resulting in Emanuel’s emotional collapse. > As she faints, her subconscious takes her to a surreal world where she clutches the doll, enveloped in an ocean, symbolizing her unresolved grief.
In a breathtaking moment, Emanuel plunges through a metaphorical window into water, encountering the vision of her deceased mother swimming towards her. The doll inexplicably comes to life, rushing to the mother, who envelops Emanuel in a warm embrace before both vanish beneath the waves. The call of her name reverberates in the air, drawing Emanuel back to reality as she’s found on a gurney, surrounded by her father and a police officer. Confusion reigns as she’s transported to the hospital, her memories of the harrowing events obscured by fog.
As the narrative unfolds, Heinrich learns of Linda’s tragic history: her husband had finally brought their newborn into the world, only for it to meet an untimely demise, shrouded in inconclusive autopsy results. Linda spiraled into despair, subsequently treating the doll as a child substitute. When her husband sought help for her mental state, Linda disappeared, leaving only a cloud of speculation in her wake.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Emanuel urges her father to allow her to visit Linda at a psychiatric facility, but he adamantly refuses. This denial stirs a rebellion within Emanuel, compelling her to sneak into Linda’s home and take the doll that symbolizes their shared tragedy.
With the unwitting help of Claude, Emanuel hatches an audacious plan to enter the hospital and confront Linda about her past. During their emotional meeting, she shares her haunting vision of her mother, although she holds back the most poignant details. Their relationship blossoms into a profound connection as Emanuel guides Linda to the cemetery where her mother rests.
In a poignant climax, the two women lie side by side in the earth next to their mothers’ graves, staring up at the vast, starry sky. The deep silence that envelops them signifies a newfound peace, tempered by their shared experiences and the understanding that true healing often resides in facing the darkest corners of one’s soul.
