Yvonne, Adèle Haenel tells her young son every night the adventures of his father Jean, a police officer who died two years before. She is a lieutenant herself, and she prefers being on the field to the desk job she has. During a routine interrogation, she discovers that Jean was a corrupt cop who had Antoine imprisoned, a man who previously had a clean record, for a jewellery shop hold-up. Louis, a colleague who is in love with her, convinces Yvonne to keep silent and let Antoine finish his last weeks in jail.

Antoine, Pio Marmaï gets released soon. Yvonne, who is regretful, follows him and notices that after years of imprisonment he is now mentally unsettled. Antoine finds his wife, Agnès — who has been waiting for him — and his behavior becomes strange and sometimes violent: petty theft and punches at several people who attack him in a pub. Yvonne lets him slip away at every turn.

After a fight with his wife, he wanders the road and decides to jump into the sea. Yvonne, who has been shadowing him, dives in to save him. They return to the city in a stolen car, and Yvonne is both stunned and drawn to him. She goes home to her son, who is being looked after by Louis, and she then flirts with Antoine, much to his astonishment.

The next day, Antoine is brought to the police station for crashing the car. Not wanting Antoine to know she works with the police, Yvonne sits on a bench with prostitutes to appear as one of them.

Antoine, thinking Yvonne is a prostitute, invites her to dinner, but Louis orchestrates a fake suspect chase that pulls her away. Disappointed, Antoine takes restaurant personnel hostage and sets the place on fire. Yvonne rescues him from the scene and hides him in a disused underground sado-masochist club. Antoine escapes, leaves his wife, and handcuffs Yvonne to a bedpost to go rob the jewellery shop he was supposed to rob, thereby becoming truly guilty and giving meaning to the imprisonment that scarred his youth.

Yvonne escapes and finally confronts Antoine in the jewellery shop. She helps him take the jewels and convinces him to flee to join his wife, while she herself is arrested.

Much later, Yvonne is released from prison and is reunited with Louis, who has kept an eye on her son during the intervening years.
