An alien spacecraft navigates the expansive void of space before crashing into Earth near Antarctica. The exact circumstances of its arrival remain a mystery, setting the stage for the ensuing horror.

A helicopter chases a terrified husky dog as a frantic man aboard tries to kill it. The husky finds refuge at Outpost 31, an American research station filled with twelve crew members preparing for the winter.

Two panicked Norwegians arrive at Outpost 31 after landing their helicopter, creating confusion among the American crew. The situation escalates when one Norwegian accidentally kills his pilot with a grenade, causing chaos.

To understand the threat, MacReady and Copper travel to the Norwegian base. They discover destruction and a horrifying alien creature frozen in an ice block, hinting at the terror that has begun.

After being placed in a kennel, the husky reveals itself as an alien entity capable of gruesome transformations. Clark witnesses the creature brutally attack and slaughter the other sled dogs, raising immediate alarm.

The team realizes that the alien can perfectly mimic any life form it consumes, creating paranoia among the crew. Growing fear of infection sets in, leading to distrust and speculation about the implications for humanity.

MacReady organizes a blood test to identify any infected crew members, but the atmosphere becomes increasingly hostile. As chaos erupts, suspicion leads to fractious confrontations among the once-cohesive team.

The research team faces devastating losses as more crew members fall victim to the alien's influence. Only a few remain, including MacReady, Childs, and Garry, who must confront the growing threat together.

MacReady ignites a stick of dynamite and hurls it at the monstrous form of Blair, resulting in a massive explosion that destroys the research station. Flames engulf the outpost as the last vestiges of hope flicker away.

As smoke clears from the explosion, MacReady confronts Childs amidst the ruins. They grapple with their mutual distrust, questioning who among them might still be human, leading to an unsettling standoff.

Amidst their distrust, MacReady and Childs share swigs of whiskey, reflecting on their haunting situation. The film concludes with an ambiguous fate hanging over them, leaving viewers to ponder the existential dread they face.
