The Thicket

The movie concludes with a brutal final showdown at the hideout known as the Thicket, where Jack, Lula, and their allies confront Bill and her gang. Despite heavy losses—Malachi and Jimmy die defending Lula, and Eustace sustains a fatal injury—they manage to fight their way through the gang. Lula, driven by her rage and trauma, overpowers Bill during their confrontation, and although Bill initially disarms Jack in the fight, Lula ultimately beat her to a pulp, nearly killing her. However, at the last moment, Bill is shot and killed by Jones from a distance, ending her reign of terror. Tragically, Jack is fatally wounded in the process, and he dies in Lula’s arms, his lifeless eyes a heartbreaking reminder of the violence they’ve endured. Lula, devastated and grief-stricken, mourns her brother’s death as she cuts off Bill’s head to take it as proof of justice and bounty collection. In the end, Lula and Jones share the bounty money, and despite her insistence that Jones stay with her, he chooses to part ways, leaving her to start anew in Montana. The film closes with Lula paying her respects at Jack’s grave, hinting at hope for the future but acknowledging the lasting scars of her past—she has transformed from an innocent girl into someone hardened by violence, capable of cruelty when pushed to her limits. As she and Jones try to build a new life, her darkness and trauma remain a part of her, suggesting that while she might find a new beginning, the shadows of her experiences will always linger. The ending ultimately emphasizes the consuming toll of violence and the complex, often irreversible effects it has on those left behind.
