The Swimmers

The film intricately weaves the inspiring tale of two teenage Syrian refugees, Yusra Mardini and her sister Sarah Mardini, who risk their lives in a desperate attempt to escape their war-torn homeland. Their journey begins under relatively joyous circumstances in Syria, where they live with their loving parents, Ezzat Mardini and Mervat Mardini. Ezzat, their father and swimming coach, harbors dreams of seeing his talented daughters make their mark at the Olympics. Yusra, the more proficient swimmer, often finds herself in the spotlight, while Sarah assumes a significant leadership role within their tight-knit family.

However, the outbreak of civil war and the escalating violence against President Assad catalyzes their forced departure from Syria. Despite four years of unwavering dedication to their sport, the sisters confront the painful reality that their Olympic aspirations are slipping further from reach with each day of conflict. The oppressive presence of Assad’s forces only adds to their despair, as they face harassment at every checkpoint. In a bold move to reclaim their dreams, the sisters decide to embark on a perilous migration journey to Germany, despite their father’s reservations for their safety.

After a close brush with disaster when the venue for Yusra’s swimming competition is bombed, she successfully persuades Ezzat to let them travel with their cousin Nizar to Europe. They initially plan a safer land route, but after arriving in Istanbul, they find themselves drawn to a smuggler’s offer of a sea passage to Lesbos for $2000 each — a choice that ignites a mix of hope and trepidation.

As they board a precarious, overcrowded rubber dinghy, fear grips them. The boat begins to take on water, propelling Yusra and Sarah into action. “We have to save everyone,” Yusra recalls, signaling their desperate undertaking as they leap into the tumultuous waters, swimming alongside the frail dinghy to prevent it from sinking. The morning sun greets them as they set foot on Greek soil, marking the beginning of a long and grueling odyssey.

Once in Greece, they encounter societal estrangement, where locals turn away from refugees, leading to a life of uncertainty amidst UN aid efforts and refugee camps. Amidst these trials, skilled diplomat and kind-hearted friend, Emad, emerges with budding affections for Sarah, who grapples with the weight of their new reality.

The journey becomes treacherous as they encounter unscrupulous smugglers, abandoned in desolate terrains, and heart-stopping moments of danger, including a harrowing experience where Sarah and Yusra narrowly escape a rape attempt during a frantic search for shelter. Their resilience is further tested when they find solace momentarily in a hotel thanks to Nizar’s resourcefulness, but their fight for freedom is far from over.

Having reached Germany, the sisters face the daunting process of asylum applications, living in cramped conditions. Two months pass, with no resolution in sight, yet the indomitable spirit of Yusra prevails as she works relentlessly on her swimming technique, driven by dreams of the Olympics. Their encounter with Sven, a local coach, becomes a turning point. He sees the sisters’ potential, offering Yusra a chance to train and pursue the dream that seemed lost.

As Yusra hones her skills, she learns of a groundbreaking initiative by the International Olympic Committee to create a Refugee Team for the upcoming Rio Olympics. Encouraged by her sister’s unwavering support, Yusra dedicates herself to training, aware that her opportunity is just within reach. The transformation leads to a moment of triumph when she finally receives her Olympic kit, igniting jealousy in Sarah, who struggles with her own path and returns to Lesbos to aid others.

As the narrative culminates at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Yusra becomes a symbol of hope for many, yet she faces the harsh truth of discrimination, battling feelings of inadequacy among elite athletes. Still, with Sarah cheering her on from the stands, Yusra makes the event memorable by triumphantly finishing her heat in the 100m butterfly with an impressive time.

The film closes on a poignant note, revealing the harsh aftermath: Sarah, now dedicating her life to humanitarian efforts, endures legal troubles while the rest of the Mardini family ultimately escapes the horrors of their homeland, reuniting in Berlin.
