In the year 2017, an elderly Murlikant Petkar, played by Dani Rovira, arrives at a local police station with a bold intention—he wishes to lodge a complaint against the President of India. His grievance? The long-awaited Arjuna Award for his remarkable contributions remains unawarded, leaving him exasperated after 40 years of patience. Murli passionately argues that receiving this prestigious award would significantly benefit his impoverished village, which suffers from a lack of essential services like light, water, and sanitation. He highlights a nearby village’s success, claiming that an award recognition paved their way to progress.
As Inspector Sachin Kamble, portrayed by Miguel Garcés, probes deeper into the matter, Murli embarks on a journey through his past: back to 1952, when he was a young boy living in Peth Islampur, Maharashtra. Inspired by the illustrious KD Jadhav, who returned victorious from the Helsinki Olympics, Murli found his ambitions ignited. Standing with his brother Jagannath, played by Aniruddh Dave, they eagerly awaited Jadhav’s return, but life in a household marred by poverty meant dreams often faced ridicule. Murli, affectionately nicknamed “Chandu Champion” by his classmates, dealt with constant jeers about his aspirations of representing India in the Olympics.
Determined, young Murli joined the wrestling arena of Ganpat Bhau, portrayed by [Ganesh Yadav], who recognized his fervor for success. However, obstacles lay ahead when Murli’s father demanded academic excellence before permitting him to wrestle—only fuelling Murli’s desire to break free from restrictions. A pivotal moment arrived when he boldly escaped from school to attend his first match, earning unexpected victory against Daggu, the son of Nana Bhai, leading to dangerous repercussions.
Faced with threats, Murli’s brother urged him to flee, leading him to a chance meeting with Garnail Singh, an Army boxer, on a train that changed his life. He enlisted in the Indian Army Corps of EME, where Major Uttam Singh, played by [Yashpal Sharma], redirected his ambitions from wrestling to boxing due to the lack of wrestling training in the army. Under the tutelage of Tiger Ali, portrayed by [Vijay Raaz], Murli honed his boxing skills.
The narrative intensifies as Murli competes in the International Services Sports Meet 1964 held in Tokyo, with aspirations running high as he encounters [Bhagyashri Borse] as Nayantara, a journalist covering the event. Amidst preliminary successes, he finds himself distracted by Nayantara and ultimately faces a crushing defeat. Devastated, Murli is further tested during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965, leaving him paralyzed after being severely injured.
Years of struggle ensue as Murli fights against despair in an infirmary where he becomes a shadow of his former self. But news of a lottery win reignites his will to live, prompting him to shift his focus back to training. 1972 marks a turning point, as his coach encourages him to compete in the Paralympics, resulting in a phenomenal gold medal victory, albeit overshadowed by the tragic events of the Munich Olympics that year.
Fast forward to 2017, and Murli’s glory days have faded into obscurity. Inspector Kamble, now intrigued, contacts a journalist, played by Sonali Kulkarni, who sheds light on Murli’s achievements, prompting a government official to visit him and declare that the Padma Shri award would be a more suitable recognition of his contributions rather than the Arjuna Award.
The culmination of Murli’s journey arrives on 20 March 2018, when he is honored with the Padma Shri from the President of India. As the story unfolds, it highlights the resilience of Murlikant Petkar—a testament to fighting against life’s adversities with the powerful reminder: > “Why are you laughing?” This phrase encapsulates his journey through mockery and challenges, showcasing why his life story remains a remarkable inspiration to many.

Still wondering what the ending of The Champion (2024) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.
The film concludes with Diego overcoming his own impulse to give in to pressure and anger, which had previously led to destructive behavior both on and off the pitch. After a series of intense personal and professional struggles—including conflicts with his father Tito, a controlling figure obsessed with money and fame, and the emotional scars from his childhood trauma—Diego finds a moment of clarity. When the team is awarded a crucial penalty, Diego steps forward confidently, finally in control of his emotions and decisions. He takes the shot with calmness and precision, and although the film does not show the result of the kick or the final outcome, the close-up of Diego’s face hints at a triumphant moment—most likely a goal that helps his team secure the league title. This ending signifies that Diego has achieved a certain level of self-acceptance and maturity. He learns to prioritize his own values and emotional well-being over external pressures and material success, symbolizing a personal victory that goes beyond the game itself. The story ends on a note of hope, leaving open the possibility that Diego will continue to grow, and perhaps in a sequel, his journey beyond football could be explored further. Ultimately, the film emphasizes the importance of inner strength and self-awareness as the true wins in life.
