After a day in the mountains, Maria returns to Nonnberg Abbey and is informed by the Mother Abbess that she will become the new governess for the von Trapp children. This assignment will place her into the Captain's household and into the center of their music-filled life.

Maria is greeted coolly by the Captain and introduced to the von Trapp children, who enter with military precision. She senses the Captain's emotional distance since his wife's death and resolves to win the children's trust through music.

To win their trust, Maria starts teaching them singing and basic music. Her approach helps the children open up, while the Captain remains emotionally distant.

A month later the Captain returns home with Elsa Schraeder and Max Detweiler. The children arrive in play clothes Maria made, shocking and embarrassing the Captain. Maria confronts him, telling him he does not understand his children, and he orders her to return to the Abbey.

The Captain's perspective shifts when he hears his children sing for Schraeder, and he realizes Maria's truth. He embraces his children and asks Maria to stay on as governess.

The Captain hosts a grand party to introduce Schraeder, and the family is presented to guests. The youngest son asks Maria to teach him a dance, and the Captain steps in to help. As they dance, a quiet attraction develops between Maria and the Captain, which Maria tries to stop.

Brigitta confronts Maria, asserting that the attraction is real. Maria denies it, but the confrontation confirms that the Captain's children see what she cannot fully acknowledge. The moment heightens the tension between duty and romance.

Maria sneaks back to the Abbey and confesses that she has fallen in love with the Captain and is ready to take her vows. The Mother Abbess refuses to grant the vows and encourages Maria to face the life she was born to live.

Maria returns to the von Trapp home and is warmly greeted by the children, who had missed singing. She learns that the Captain intends to marry Schraeder, and she resolves to fulfill her duties until a suitable arrangement can be made.

The Captain and Maria finally admit their feelings for each other and decide to marry at the Abbey. They begin to plan a life together, facing the reality of their evolving relationship.

On their honeymoon, Germany annexes Austria, changing the country’s fate and threatening the von Trapp family. The couple's future becomes intertwined with the wider crisis of war.

Upon their return, the Captain is ordered to join the German Navy and report to Bremerhaven. Maria hands the Admiral the Kaltzberg Festival program, demonstrating that the von Trapp Family Singers will perform, which stalls any immediate departure.

Max announces a guard of honor waiting to escort the Captain after the concert. Maria leads the family in one final song, and they begin to slip away toward the Abbey as the threat of capture grows. The Nazis search the festival and the Abbey, but the family evades capture for the moment.

With Maria's help, the family escapes over the mountains to safety, leaving Austria behind to begin a new life away from the Nazi regime. Their flight marks the end of their current life and the start of a perilous new chapter.
