The Song of Scorpions

Nooran is an independent young healer who cures scorpion stings by singing the sacred 'song of scorpions'. She belongs to a desert tribe of singers and earns a living, despite the villagers' disapproval. She secretly saves some money and sends the rest to her friend Amina to donate at the local dargah. Her grandmother Zubaida openly opposes her methods and warns her against exploiting the poor.

Adam, a camel-trader, spots Nooran and falls in love at first sight. He proposes marriage, but the village lashes out, accusing him of attempting to outrage the modesty of a local woman. Nooran remains silent about her feelings as the community's judgment crowds in.

Nooran confides in Amina about Adam and the precarious situation she faces, though she does not reveal her feelings openly. The pressure from the village grows stronger as rumors begin to swirl. Amina offers quiet support as she tries to help her friend through the uncertainty.

That night Nooran is summoned to Munna’s scorpion bite, but it becomes a trap. Munna rapes her while she realises the deception she walked into. Zubaida had warned against going out at night, but Nooran goes anyway in desperation.

In the morning, Amina brings the traumatized Nooran home, only to find Zubaida missing. Nooran searches the village and the surrounding dunes for her grandmother, grieving and frightened. The shock ripples through the community as whispers turn toward her abilities.

The villagers decide that Nooran has brought a bad name and should be expelled from the village. Some women urge her to go to the city to earn money or survive, but Amina stays by her side. Yet Nooran realizes their powerlessness against the social tides.

Driven by helplessness, Nooran reluctantly agrees to Adam's marriage proposal and moves into his house. She hopes to find safety and a way to support herself, even if it means enduring an unequal arrangement.

Within Adam's house she learns that Adam is already married and has a teenage daughter named Ayesha. She struggles to adjust to her new life but slowly tries to befriend Ayesha and maintain some dignity. The estranged status of her own life gnaws at her as she seeks a sense of belonging.

One night, after a confrontation, Adam releases a scorpion on Munna. Munna endures agony and implies that Adam ordered the assault and possibly orchestrated Zubaida's disappearance. The moment deepens Nooran's sense of betrayal.

A dying Munna reveals the truth to Nooran, including Adam's manipulation and the earlier assault. She is overwhelmed, shocked, and unable to save him, and she buries his body in the sand. The revelation also casts a shadow on Zubaida's fate.

Nooran discovers she is pregnant; the news is greeted with mixed emotions by the female relatives who celebrate, but Nooran feels hollow and uncertain about the child's paternity. She wonders if the baby is Munna's or Adam's, amplifying her inner turmoil. The pregnancy adds another layer of complexity to an already shattered life.

Adam returns home to find Nooran missing and sets out to find her in the dunes. He confronts her, and in a poignant moment she allows one of her pet scorpions to bite him. As the sting sinks in, Nooran begins singing the song of scorpions, leaving their fate ambiguous—whether the song saves them both or seals their doom.
