The Snow Queen

The tale opens with a storyteller Valeri Nikitenko recounting the legend of the Snow Queen, a winter-wrapped fable about friendship, resilience, and a bond that can thaw even the coldest heart. In a small, sunlit home, two children stand at its center: Gerda Elena Proklova and her adopted brother Kay Vyacheslav Tsyupa, who live under the care of their warmhearted grandmother Yevgeniya Melnikova. Their world is bright with family rituals and stories, a sanctuary that will soon face a chilling test when a sly Counselor arrives, seeking to seize the storyteller’s rare blooming roses for profit and leaving a dark mark on the village.

The Counselor, an agent of the Snow Queen, pushes his way into their life and clashes with their sense of safety. When the elder refuses, he vows revenge, setting a ominous plan in motion. Not long after, the Snow Queen Natalya Klimova herself appears, laying claim to Kay and offering a cold, glittering kiss that freezes his heart and alters his nature, turning him distant, harsh, and unrecognizable to those who love him. The snow-swept world outside mirrors the change inside Kay as he drifts further from his sister and grandmother, until a sledding outing ends with his disappearance into the Snow Queen’s icy palace.

Determined to bring Kay back, Gerda embarks on a long and perilous journey. Along the way, a raven and his bride offer guidance and lead her toward a royal palace where help may be found. There, the young Prince Georgiy Korolchuk meets her, and the accompanying Princess Irina Gubanova stands with them as allies. Although Gerda is briefly mistaken for Kay, the kindness she encounters from the royal couple soon turns into tangible support: a golden carriage, warm clothing, and what she hopes will be the means to reach her brother. Back at the heart of power, the Counselor seeks to capture Gerda, and the King Evgeni Leonov relies on scheming plans to trap her. The storyteller’s presence remains a beacon of hope—even as the path grows darker, his voice reminds everyone of the strength found in faith and memory.

As danger closes in, the Counselor forms an alliance with a gang of robbers to ambush Gerda’s carriage. The trap nearly succeeds, but the gang’s lonely daughter, Little Robber Girl Era Ziganshina, befriends Gerda and offers a glimmer of mercy. With the help of a talking reindeer, Gerda escapes, escaping not only capture but also the cold menace that has pursued her. The reunion of courage and kindness underscores the tale’s core message: perseverance and empathy can bend even the harshest fates toward mercy and hope.

The journey brings Gerda to the Snow Queen’s palace, where she finds Kay, frozen and obedient, working to complete a puzzle of ice shards that spell the word “Eternity.” It is the pure power of love and a shared history—memories of laughter, warmth, and their mutual care—that melts the ice around him and breaks the Queen’s spell. Kay’s heart loosens, his emotions return, and together they move to confront the queen, drawing strength from the depth of their bond. The Snow Queen can no longer keep them apart, and the couple begins the long walk home.

Their return is a warm, heartfelt reunion, celebrated by friends and family who have stood by them throughout the ordeal—the grandmother’s house once again echoes with stories, and the storyteller’s tale finds its gentle close.
