When a menacing sorcerer known as Kartaus-Red Mustache plots to snuff out the light of Russia, he dispatches Kastryuk the werewolf, a cunning and dangerous emissary, to pry apart the hero’s defenses and sow chaos where there once was order. Kastryuk’s deceitful ruse draws Finist into a dungeon where the magic of Kartaus takes hold, and the mighty bogatyr is transformed into a smoldering monster, a grim shadow of his former self. The land trembles as the duel between fate and enchantment tilts toward catastrophe.

At the frontier, a voivode and his loyal druzhina prepare to fend off raiding invaders, steadying the outpost with discipline and resolve. The city clerk, Yashka, is sent on a quest to locate Finist, to learn whether the hero can be reclaimed or must be replaced. During this journey, Yashka crosses paths with Alyonushka, the betrothed of Finist, whose steadfast heart becomes a beacon amid growing darkness. Together they embark on a perilous trek through forests and fields, joined by the chance encounter with Agathon and his wife Anfisa—peasantry whose fears are sharpened by whispers of a fearsome monster that roars through the trees. The road’s silence is broken by the strange arrival of an old woman named Nenila, who speaks in riddles about wishes and fates. She reveals a spark of ancient magic: a wish can be granted on a fern that very night, and the true cure for the bewitched Finist lies in a paradox—love must strike true while he remains under the monstrous guise.

In a heated moment of dispute, Anfisa declares that Agathon should “disappear off the face of the earth,” a harsh outburst that adds tension to the group’s fragile alliance. The next day, Anfisa seeks the return of Agathon and Alyonushka follows, their bond tested by the trials ahead. Kartaus, ever patient and plotting, sends Kastryuk to the frontier disguised as a merchant, hoping to slip a rift into the gates and open them for his war band.
