The Return of Musketeers or the Treasure of Cardinal Mazarini

Athos cannot bear the grief of losing his two closest brothers, Aramis and Porthos, who were killed in a fight with royal guardsmen. The bond between the three musketeers was so deep that their deaths left him with nothing to live for, leading him to take poison in the solitude of his estate.

Earlier in the story, Athos had foreshadowed his inability to survive alone when he worried about what would become of him if his brothers were gone.

The spirits of the dead musketeers watch over their children from beyond the grave. When d'Artagnan's son Raoul is killed and the remaining children are captured, d'Artagnan's spirit delivers a heartfelt prayer from the afterlife that breaks the barrier between generations, allowing the fathers to return to earth and save their descendants.

With the original musketeers gone, Parliament debates a treasury heist that implicates Cardinal Mazarin as the mastermind behind the disappearance of royal wealth. The people blame Queen Anne of Austria for being complicit in Mazarin's schemes, leaving her without defenders in a political crisis that threatens her honor and the kingdom's stability.

When Mazarin dies in England, his wealth passes to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) along with the legendary Templar Ring. According to centuries-old legends, this ring grants immortality, making it a prize worth fighting for and adding a mystical element to the political treasure hunt.

After Aramis, Porthos, Athos, and d'Artagnan all die, France is left without its greatest defenders. The children, Jacqueline (d'Artagnan's daughter), Raoul (Athos's son), Henri (Aramis's son), and Angelica (Porthos's daughter), must step forward to reclaim the stolen treasury and restore the queen's honor, though they initially lack the skill of their fathers.

Leon is the captain of the Royal Guards who initially opposes the young musketeers. However, when he discovers he is the son of Porthos, his loyalties shift dramatically. This revelation adds a personal family reunion to the political conspiracy and strengthens the bonds between the new generation.

The children attempt to reclaim France's wealth for the queen, but their mission fails because they lack the experience and skill of their fathers. Raoul is killed in an unequal skirmish while the others are captured, demonstrating the danger of the quest and the need for the fathers' return.

De Jussac was the sworn enemy of d'Artagnan and the original musketeers. When the fathers are revived through d'Artagnan's prayer, de Jussac also revives and pursues the same treasure. His return intensifies the race to secure the wealth and adds a familiar villain to the final confrontation.

During the Siege of Maastricht in the Franco-Dutch War, d'Artagnan rises to become Marshal of France, as Athos predicted during the Siege of La Rochelle. However, just after he finally secures the cherished baton that represents his rank, a cannonball strikes him, killing him and ending the era of the original musketeers.

Cardinal Mazarin orchestrated the theft of royal treasury, and since he was closely associated with Queen Anne of Austria, the people and Parliament deem her complicit in his crimes. Recovering the treasure becomes essential not just for France's finances but for clearing the queen's name and restoring her honor.

After Mazarin dies in England, his treasure and the Templar Ring transfer to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The young musketeers must confront the Jesuits' schemes to reclaim the French fortune. In the end, the Jesuits are defeated and the children's reunion with their parents secures victory.
